A recent report from Dr. Mofeed Mfichael outlined wltbin the elght municipalities ln Durham Region, Whitby is accountable for 48 per cent of the residen- tial growth to date this year. Our industrial base is'stil expanding and wlthin the eleven areas of industrial complex units, I believe by August of this year, ail space- will be filled.- Therefore, consideration is underway to provide additional complex units to meet the growlng demand from industries interested in relocating to Whitby. At present we are able to meet the increased demand for ladustrial servlced land which as weil looks extremely promislag for 1%41s anticipated goals. Needless to say, our competitive marketing strategles have kept pace with giant cities across the province and throughout Canada. Althougb council and staff 'are basically respon- sible for the exceptional growth, I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to our two gover- nment representatîves wbo work on our behaif to make possible many of the successful endeavours we are acbieving in Whitby...George-Ashe, Minister of Government Services and our representative, bas flot only supported our ventures but encouraged a new surge of interest from the Hong Kong market due to bis recent mission overseas. Mr. Scott Fen- neil, our federal Member of Parliament is equally involved as a supportive link in serving several in- dustries in the Town of Wbitby to rceacb anticipated goals and bas saved many from existing problems which could have created a major impact on'our economy. To these two gentlemen, L extend our gratitude. WITH OPTION TO BUY DURHAM KEYBOARD CENTRE 355 BLOOR ST.*W OSHAWA 725-0001 I would also- like to comment on the recent development of the "Durham Region Export Club", whlch was initiated through our communlty's en- deavours and a gentleman, Mr. Bruce Bennett who recognlzed our pôtentlal for spearheadlng this project. Exportlng, mportlng and lnvestments play an important role in the stabilization of our country. Tbrough Mr. Joe Janthur, Chairman of the Ontario Export Association, who recognized the need for an informal club of, this nautre;, formed'lees than two years ago, "an organization of people to provide an informaI forAm for the promotion of knowledge and awareness of International business". At that time, the four mnterested members belleved in this goal and to, date, the Toronto Export Club bas ap- proxlmately 400 members not to mention the large number of Export Clubs formlng across Canada and the United States. We are very supportive of the Durham Region Export Club and'encourage our Whltby industriesito, support this networklng of communications among people interested in the same objectives. At our inaugural meeting held March 27, we were extremely pleased to have over 100 representatives attend and would llke to extend congratulations to Mr. Tom Campney, General Motors of Canada <Canadian Export Operations) for accepting the position of chairman as well as Mr. Des Newman, President of Cametoid Llmited for accepting the position of deputy chairman. We look forward tu a fulfand active meeting on April 24, at 8:30 a.m. in the- dining lounge of Durham College's Main Building. A recent visit to review the barbeor development for 1984 also reinforced the growth we are experien- cing in Whitby. Eigbty (80) new slips have been ad- ded under the'federal Department 0fOceans and Fisheries support funding program and as well, we are pleased to announce approval from» the federal Departmentof Revenue, Customs and Excise, that as of May 24, a Telephone Vessel Reporting Station will be available for, incoming craft to our Port Wbitby Marina. Constructioôn is definitely evident within the area and altbough I apologize for any k*n- convenience, I look anxiously at this element as progress for our people. As an avid reader of the newspapers la our area, I am certain you are also aware of the construction of the new Baptist Leader Education Centre on tbe property of Cullen's new proposed Heritage Park. It will be completed and ready for students for the fal of this year.
