PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14, 1984, WHITBY FREE PRESS "PROGRESS EDITION" National Trust has grown with Canada: assests now $2.7b In 1898, when Canada was only 31 years old, it had 5,200,000 people, a gross national product of $1 billion and a national debt òf $338 million. The country was struggling out of a tough depression. Financial requirements were uncomplicated and mainly handled by the banks. But as industry and commerce expanded, and private wealth in- creased, so did the demand for more residential mortgage and loan companies as well as a new type of corporation that could manage the growing private wealth. Trust companies were established to act as a fiduciary (trustee) for a fee - that is, it holds assets in trust for cor- porations or individuals. In 1898, George Cox, one of Canada's leading businessmen and senators, and a few colleagues provided start-up capital of $1 million to form the National Trust Com- pany. Its shares were listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. One of only 50 companies and a dozen banks then listed. The following year, National Trust opened a Montreal office and then, in 1900, took over the Manitoba Trust Company in Winnipeg. By the end of that year, it had $1 million in- vested in farm mor- tgages. The Edmonton office opened in 1902, Vancouver in 1947, Vic- toria in 1950, Calgary in 1951. The company had always been em- powered to accept Whitby had year of exceptional growth: mayor By THE WORSHIPFUL ROBERT A. ATTERSLEY Mayor and Regional Councillor The Corporation of the Town of Whitby It is a pleasure to recognize the exceptional growth which has occured during this past year within the Town of Whitby. As mayor, I take pride in sharing in this develop- ment and our respective "team efforts'" through council, administration and staff, who have ultimately molded together a great town in the Province of Ontario. Within the scope of our com- muriity, diversification exists. From the industrious growth to the balance of leisure living. In 1984, the new eastern distribution centre of the L.C.B.O. will open its doors adding 450,000 square feet of building on their 50 acre parcel of land and will be serving the area from Ottawa to London from their Whitby location...a tremendous plus for Whitby. Industrial development in this community has been phenominal during these past few years especially during a time of economic restraint and yet we anticipate 1984 will reach an even greater echelon of growth providing more jobs for our people. Within the last month alone requests for relocation have been flowing in from all parts of the world. Residential development is also on an all time high in this municipality and to support the aspect. of a great place to live. Whitby Town Council recen- tly brought forward a 1.9 per cent increase in taxes for 1984. The retainment of regal elegance within our subdivisions is complimented with the quality development and planning behind each home con- structed within this area and yet offers a special blend to the many heritage dwellings still within our town today. Reviewing the equal contribution of the recreational attractions to our economy, the dollar and job statistics have proven the tourism industry to be the second major industry in Ontario. We in Whitby recognize this aspect and in this com- munity, through Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village, again close to one million tourists visited this area and to add to the future projection, an ad- ditional 87 acres are underway to provide "Heritage Park" to their Taunton Road property. Our Port Whitby Marina was filled to capacity in 1983 and due to its success has engaged in the development of ad- ditional slips to meet the growing interest in boating. In the area of theatre, Whitby is proud to have the professionalism offered at the Marigold Dinner Playhouse, as well as the community talent demon- strated through the Whitby Theatre Company. The Station Gallery in Whitby has also become an inter- nationally recognized cultural medium, housed in the historical Whitby Train Station and is a com- pliment to the turn of the century Lynde House Museum. As a rounded community Whitby also provides the world's largest go-kart raceway for the sports sector. With our many parks, golf courses, arenas and other leisure and recreational outlets, I believe Whitby offers exceptional support in the region as a great place to visit, even for those who live here. From the services through organizations and churches to the fine hospitality offered in the business sector, the Town of Whitby ensures total living is our business and a positive way of life. It is, therefore, a pleasure to provide this report on the progress of our town and we look forward to an even greater 1984 as a profile community within the Region of Durham. deposits in trust.
