-f I Il by ROY COOPER Preparations for the l3th annual Whltby Kin- smen Skate-A-Thon are well underway as mem- bers from the club met with the Whltby elemen- tary sehool principals or "e ee d yIrq oisPr assistnce .m.and the assistoanc e nt yu sh cildren," sandtDo MeLure, Kinsmen first vice-president, who ad- dressed the meeting. IldThis year we hope to raise $6,5W," he added. The last three skate-a- thons have raised over $20,000ý for such com- munity activities and associations as minor s ports, Cystic Fibrosis, Heart Fund, Whitby Community Care, and Big Brothers. Over 450 skaters from 12 schools participated last year, however, the new Colonel Farewell School has been added to the roster so Kinsmen hope there will be over 500 skaters this year. While students help to raise funds for com- munity work, they can also win prizes for their schools and themselves. Discussing plans for next month's W hitby Kinsmen Skate-A-Thon are from left: Bill Batten, Kathleen Rowe Public Sehool principal; Owen McCann, Kinsmen President; George Hewson, Kinsmen Secretary; Lea Kitchen, West Lynde Public School Teacher; and Don McLure, Kinsmen First Vice-President. The school prize for- mula is based on the percentage of students attending from a school, the total money raised per school divided by the number of its skaters, and. the total money raised per school divided by its total population. Prizes of $700, $500, $300 and $100 will be awarded to the winning schools at the Kinsmen Meeting. on March 13. Intellivisions will also be awarded at this time to the top boy and girl over and under 10- years-old. Other prizes include Big\ Mac coupons for skating 200 laps and silver dollars for 50 laps, free french. fries, refreshements, spot prizes, grab bags, and balloons. McLure said representatives from the Kinsmen Club will be visiting the students of 'the 13 participating schools this week to gi ve a 15-minute presen- tation' describing the event.- They also plan to leave sponsor books and posters at the schools. Although the children will be required to collect pledges and bring their sponsor books with them on the day of the skate-a-thon, McLure stipulated the students will not have to Whitby stili hais Christmas spirit Blo.od donor -cinie a success The first Whitby Red Cross blood-donor clinic of the new year held at' the legion hall on Jan. 10 had a record 414 umilts of blood donated com- pared to last year's total of 378 for the samemon- th. Margaret .Holder, Whitby blood donor chairman, believes the increase may be due to the Christmas spirit carrying on into, the new year.. "There were a lot of students and a lot of fir- st-timers," she said. Although 453 people attended the clinic, 34 could not donate due to medical reasons., According to Holder, there is often a blood shortage during the win- ter months as traffic ac- cidents are usually more frequent at this time of the year.' The Whitby branch will hold its next clinic on April 10 at legion hall, Byron Street South, from 1 p.m. to 8 P.M. Free Press Staff Photo collect the money from the sponsors later.
