WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 21,'1983 PAGE 5 LETTRS TO HE DITOR w 'People power' Dear Editor; Christmas is just about here and the reality is that flot many of us will be worrying about what political writers and politicians bave to say for a few days at least. And yet, Christmas itself may cause some of us to pause and reflect upon the most important issue 0f our time - Peace. In an international sense tbe words wbich are familiar - Peace on Earch and Good Wiil Toward Ail Men and Women - ring rather boilow as we reflect upon the borrors of con- filet that exist in the 'world today and upon tbe fear of nuclear war that confronts the world. Last night, at the school wbere I work, we enjoyed our annual Christmas Concert and party. One could flot help but be moved by the spectacle of eager young students, full of talent and expectations, and proud parents, brothers and, sisters, and equaily proud teachers, ail brougbt together by the spirit of Christmas. The warmth and joy f the evening was exhllerating. One left the concert wlth a feeling that life is good and that people are good and tbat we can share moments of great The 1Christmas holiday season is here! Do you recala year ago we were organizing the first Marigold Festival? And better yet, the 1983 Festival took place only 90Odays pasti1 The first-year pain is, over!1 We are now witbin $2,000 of completing our financial obligations. And the lessons we bave learnedi Events plan- ned for early 1984 sbould clear our 1983 debts. The 1984 planning began on the weekend of Our '83 Festival. And it has carried on since!1 Our next plannin meeting is scheduled for Jan. 12, 1984 at the Town Municipal Building. Your ideas are welcomed and we would love to see. you then!1 Tbe planning process is long and arduous and your input at that meeting, and beyond, would be most ap- preciated. The job is a tough one, but not insurmountable. We have indeed learned' a tremendous amount about presenting this major community event. Your assistance with the first Festival was very mucb ap- preciated. It would be great if I could meet or eaU every single person and organization that was involved. But, witb so many names on the list, I find it impossible to do so!1 Would you, please recognize that, and accept the heart felt thanks of myseif and the organizing committee, for your cont ribution to what we feel was a most successful start on a tremendously valid, worthwbile and needed weekend, of post- summer celebration for the people 0f our great town. I wili mention again that success is not at- tained by any one per- wil bring peace happiness and fellowship, togetber and that in the basic decen- cy and goodness of in-. dividual people lies our greatest hope for peace because we love our kids and we want a future for themn. Recent events in the West and east have become encouraging. it appears that there is in- deed a peace movement developing in Russia and tbe countries of Eastern Europe. In- dividuals take con- siderable risk in Russia when tbey join sucb movements but, accor- ding to. reports in a recent edition of a national newspaper the movement is there and growing. Also in East Germany, a peace movement is developing. The most encouraging news is that the eburches, limnited as tbey are in freedorn of expression, are being used as the base for the growtb of the peace movement in these countries. "People for Peace" may. well become the railying cry of 1984. It is already clear that politicians are begin- ning to take note 0f the peace movement on both sides of the "iron curtain". Prime Minister son, but by the collec- tive resources of a great many, for that reason, 1 remind you that we need your voice and we needj it on Jan. 12. With many thanks and best wisbes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!, I am most grateful. H. Howard Smith, CA Chairman Whitby Marigold Festival (1983) Trudeau, whatever his motives, has done great service to the peace movement already. It is doubtful whether the appointment .0f Joe Clark as Brian Mulroney'speace envoy will have any effect. Joe is not renowned for bis prowess in international events and 50' it may well be that bis appoin- tment was, a bit of politiking or media grabbing hype.. Let us hope that people of ail parties will support .Trudeau's Peace Initiative and that it may bring one of the, super, powers to make the first move in arms reduction and thereby bring us back from the danger of nuclear war. Everybody wants peace but it seems only the united voice of people like you and me can bring politicians back to the negotiating table. The day this column was written, Trudeau was. in Washington talking to Reagan. Probably no great progress was made but the pressure 0f people power is building. I feel sure that this is the power which will even- tually give us peace.
