Whitby's ace skip, AI Gllchrist, made an im- pressive run which toak hlm within one shot of qualifying for the final eight teams. '«I was- a last-mindte repacernent but my rink was really up for the competition," said the 42-year-old businessman. Gilchrist, who lives in Ajax, established his credentials with an early 6-5 win over defending bonspiel champion Rich Vesey of Oshawa,' then rolled ta, an easy 9-2 decision over London's Alec Pinchin. His luck ran out against veteran -skip Ron Manning of Keene, Ont., who made a pressure' draw in the lOth end to preserve a 6- 5 victory. "I buried my last rock good with a raise into the four-foot circle and he couldn't see it," Gilchrist said. "He could only throw ta the button and that's what he did - it was a $1,000 shot for Manning. The eight rinks that qualified for the quar- ter-finals were guaran- teed $1,000 with a chan- ce at the. top prize of $6,000. In. the B-side, Gilchrist was a victim of swingy ice and Ottawa skip Deve Merklinger's sharp-shootmng, heavy takeout game and lost 8- 5- Oshawa curler Bob Turcotte -caused the biggest stir of the weekend when he upset defending world- champion Ed Werenich of Avonlea 8-6 in the opening round. "Bob really frustrated me,"e Werenich said. "He made as many key shots against me in that one game as I've seen in an enitire bonspiel." Turcotte, like Gilchrist,. lost to Man- ning 7-3 but took two straight games after that -- beating London's Jim. Jenkins 8-3 and Dennis Moulding of Ot- tawa 5-4. He fell ta semi-fif Garry Lawson of Lam- pton 6-4 in his fifth game to be knocked out.
