The. eveming, which served as a recruitment night, provided the op- portunity for prospec- tive big . brothers to learn about the association and the qualifications needed to become a big brother. This third aninual evenlt ran in conijunction with Big Brothers, Week and offered"« slide presentations, films and discussions. "There are presently about 100 big and little brother matches," comments Jeff Dickin- son, President of the Big Brothers Association. "Thesemeetings'.don't usually draw a substan- tial amount of people, but those who do corne oui, have a genuine in- terest in becoming a big brother." In> becoming a big brother, there are two major ,requirements, one being over 18, the other having em-. ployment. Both the big brother and, the little brother are t hen mat- ched by Case workers according -to .,per- -sonalities, hobbies, location and M'ore. When the: match has been, comfpleted, both are encouraged t0 spend approximately four hours a week together. This eventually in- creases as the relation- ship becomes more solid. The Big, Brothers Association, which was formed in 1969,, not only offers a male -influence to the- child, but provides companionship and a sense of pride to the big brother as well. For 10 year old Jason Riley, who hasbeen a little brother for four years, his big brother has filled a special space. "We have become pretty good friends," says Jason. "He (big brother Ed)*, tksme. to movies,. hockey garnes and* we do alot together." ,The-'Big Brothers Association is always lookîng for new volun- teers, as there is always a waiting list of 40 to 50 children. When he came back to the place where he had lef t his friend an hour earlier, he found the body of Mr. Nurmi lying on the pavement in the west- bound lane of Hwy. 48. Investigators found that Mr. Nurmi had died from a glancing blow to the head, and they believe he may have been struck by a passing car as he lay on the roadway. It is known that a white Chrysler Cordoba traveiled west on Hwy. 48 and turned onto Hwy. 12 at 4 a.rn. that mor- ning. Provincial police would like to talk to the driver of this car and 1any person who drove down this stretch of iHwy. 48 in the same time period. The investigating of- ficers, Prov. Const. Gary Hildenbrand and Corporal Floyd Shanks, have no promising leads to pursue. They are ap- pealing for the assistan- 'lp ce of anyone who, mîght be able to help, them with their enquiries, In- cluding information from drivers who, may have seen the victim prior to the accident.
