Between You- and Me By RUTH II OES 'flough We Travel The Worl Over to Flnd The Beautiful, We Must Carryl It Wlth Us Or We Find It Not. Ralph WaIdo Emmerson. (1803-1882) Have you driven through the.countryside lately to enjoy the wonders of autumn' The land Isablaze wîth color and a background of beiges and brown. The air is often so clear you can see for miles, the sky so blue witb cumulus clouds floatmng about that you almost have to feel we have the best of al worlds. Goldenrod, sprays of it and often large clusters, dot the landscape and cast a yeilow speil for miles around. Not necessarily the cause 0f hay fever which no doubt is- trlggered by ragWeed always growing close by, an obnoxious weed with littie beauty. Like many otherweeds, goldenrod l8 perfect in every detail and very beautiful to luok at. It can even enhance a garden in the falliIf it Is not ailowed to multiply too much. Close by purple daisy wlth the yellow centre grows, a lovely contrast. It Is very hard to find colours Ini nature which clash, they al seern to go together. Maybe fifty years ago a famous actress wore a red dress wlth a plnk sash. What an uproar there was over that. Pictures everywhere, columns devoted to the subject but today we think nothing of It. Red and pinck roses have always been beautiful together so why such an uproar even though most of it was favorable? We always allow a few weeds to grow i the gar- den and they invariably grow In the right place. The thistle is one, qulte beautiful when the bloom ap- pears, the plant tail and straight reaching high above many of the plants. Ever since I can remeber, there has been a weed with delicate blue flowers growing by the roadsides which cornes into bloom i the summer. As a child I always cailed it "'my birthday" flower. Over'the many years I didn't realize how I looked forward to it until last year when there were few blooms. I surely missed it and worried that it might not return this year but it did in great abundance. What causes great numbers of wildflowers and weeds to suddenly spring up in unacustomed places? Maybe the birds carry the seeds and drop them as they fly. One year, hundreds of yeilow plants grew up in the, marsh something we had neyer seen before. An elderly man told me years ago to, soak puff bails ail night in cold salty water before cooking the followig day. Sometimes this can be difficult; dependlng on the size. If very large, you might need' a washtub. 0f course they can be cut before soaking and they have te be peeled.
