Ge.orge Ash.N1li>I 111( )urha n West f Minister of Government Services This week, I would like to discuss a most worth- while fund-raising campaign which is taking place within our community during the month of October. The United Way is a joint effort between the publie and private sectors, and is very important if we, as a community, are to maintain and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our social service system. For this reason, l heartily endorse, the efforts of the United Way and its member agencies, and ask each of you to lend your support to this year's effor- ts. Members of our community have been faced with economic hardships making this year's fund- raising challenge even more critical. The United Way is campaigning' together to eliminate the duplication of requests for your single gift. Those involved with the United Way have found that this approach makes good sense as it allows volunteers to canvass companies, employee groups and individuals in Ajax-Pickering,. Task Forces- which -wifl be inquiring into areas which are of utmost concern to the Canadian Public. These Task Forces are on unemployment and job opportunities for Canada's youth, the accountability of Crown Corporations, productivity ini the public and private sectors, simplifying income tax, and the impact of technological. development, on em- ployment. The public has recently been advised through press anouncenients that the royal commission on "the ecomonie union and development prospects for Canada" is finally organised to start four months of public hearings. The official mandate of the commission is to ob- tain the views and concerns of Canadian public, on the future of the Canadian ecomony and pin-point the areas which are of most concern. In my opinion, Canadians have been continually voicing their concerns to the Prime Minister and his colleagues over the past year, but to no avail. Al pleas and demands have fallen on deaf ears. It is ex- traordinarily t%- o aefora oalcomssont With over one and a haif million Canadians unemployed, the Government should have dealt with these and inany other issues long age. Once again, the Liberals have missed the boat. volunteers. in Whltby, it la the Oshawa-Whltby- Newcastle United Way. A question which is often asked of the United Way volunteer is, "IWIIl my donation work in my com- munlty?" The response to this question is a definite The five United Ways which are participating in the area-wide campaign are autonomnous, and volunteers in each of these United Ways continue to review the programs and budgets of their family of community agencies. Contributions collected through the Areawide campaign are fairly distributed among the five par- ticipating United Ways based on an agreed formula.
