WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEONESDAY JULY 13, 1983, PAGE5 Between jYou and'Me 1h R (TII ('OLES w_____ A Safari in Africa OnesBunnY Warmn day this past week as I knelt on th rupligW uto h adnatl handsome man came striding across the lawn with an African.shleld in One hand and a spear in the other. Not a warllke figure but a frlend and neigh- bour who had just returned from two months in Africa. An experlenced traveller, Warren le very adept at moving through strange terrltory. i thlnk of hlm. as a woodsman because e le a nature,-lover'I feel aboveall. Ris travels have taken hlm, around the world flot as a tourlst but as a partaker and interested spec- tator wherever hie happens to be. We share a few common thoughts aboutmany thing and as hie talked this came out loud and clear. Because this lesBo important in my life«and because it le in bis Iffe we'il dweil on it for a moment. Upon one's return to our country there is a thank- fuinese which cannot be described. Our wonderful land, Our freedom from fear and-sudden death for political reasone. The beauty of our country from coast to coast, the rivers, lakes and mountains and above ail the weil being of our population. We wlll fot get into the polities of this continent Africa but we can say that living la capitalist and communlat countries is lke black and white with lit- tde grey la between. You have to experience it to believe it or have any understanding of it at ail. While on the topie of freedoms and our wonderful, magnificent country 1 would like to mention the R.C.M.P., one of the very finest police forces in the world. This lai a group which n»eyer defends itself and It la impossible for them to explain their actions because public knowledge la so sparse la regard to undercover and underground work. Get involved or travel somewhere la the world where the police and governiments are corrupt. Corruption beyond belief. What has happened to many countries wiil neyer happen here 50 return to your own land and give thanks. I say agala monles would be weil spent if we sent some of our people with a lunch bag, passport and Ivisa to some of these tragic and sad countries. Upon their retun hey probablywud kn:elnd kiss the ground asthe poperdoe anduthank God for their Canada. The mlsunderstanding and pettiness of many who don't really know how our country works might be thought out carefuily with due consideration for the gigantie task it la. Our minds could be opened up to learn constructive thoughts rather than focuslag la on destructive thoughts which so often happens and this Mf course doee nothing. 1Ihave tredtosay athoesand wowihj>th framework of a few. We have no doubt made dread- fuI mistakes la eending our people to Africa and other countries to, impose our values on the natives. Their cultures and those Mf our own native people are a wonderful thlng and we could learn much from them rather than telllag them our way of life la through or over a tent but they wlll charge through netting. The group slept in their tents and heard the elephants walklig by, the zebras and counties other beasts lacludlag lions. Encounters wlth the masai; a warrlor came to visit and Warren trled la trade for bis spear but he wanted far too much, however he ailowed Warren to tbrow it several times. The Masai don't eat beef except on very speclal occasions even though they have many cattie. They use them la show wealth, la gala prestige and they are often part of a dowry. The men drain two litres of blood from the cattle and mix It wlth their mlJk to drink. Warren's diarles are fasclaatlag and make good readlng. For lack of time we cannot relate it ail at this time but maybe next week we can carry on. Tel you about the wonders of Victoria Faile, the largest in the world, the exqulaite sunrises and sunsets and so0 much more. Warren has hobbies which give great pleasure la his friends, one la photography and he la an expert wlthout doubt. Some of hie pictures are outstandlag especilly of nature. Another hobby la collectlag feathers and maklng them into thinge of beauty. In October, Warren will be speaking at the meeting of the Whitby Historical Society and wil bring some of bis artwork, the feathered things and hopefully many of his nature slides. As for bis African slides we should have another meeting just la see them if he was willing. I arn waitlag with baited breath to see them and hope it will be soon. So until next week with more from the diaries whlch were so carefully kept and a mention of warm beer!
