This parti- cular pain bas the very fancy name of Osgood- Scblatters disease. It is really not a disease, but rather an inflammation i an area of the knee wbere the tendon joins into the growtb plate or epiphysis. Usually this condition la identlfied in an active cblld who complains of baving a tender area below tbe kneecap that geta worse wlth run- ning. Tiiere la swelling i the area and loss of motion in the knee. The treatment of this .: 1 problem lao relatively simple. Activities sucb as runnlng may bave te be modlfled if the pain becomes too uncomfort- able for the child. Swim- ming may be substitut- ed since It puts little stress on the leg. Ice can help relieve the pain, but drugs and physie- therapy are of llmited value. A positive fMature of tbla disease la tbat it stops wlth fusion 0f the growtb plate as the ado- lescent geta older and resuits i no permanent danmge t the let.
