Ruddy Hospital was given a *15,000 boost by the Optimiat Club of Whltby last Wednesday. Organizers hope tW ralse *100,000 through servie clubs and communlty organi- zations in Whitby and surrounding commu- nities. The total coet of reno- vatlng and equlpping the ward is $660,000. The Ontario Ministry of Health will provide $200,000, but Whitby must come up with the remaining *460,000. Members of several service clubs in Wbltby met with the fund- ralising commlttee and hospital administrators last Wednesday W learn what the ward will need, the type of care it wllI provide, and how they can help. "I1t's been 15 years since the hospital went Wo the pibllc for finan- cial assistance and we haven't been back sin- ce," fund-raising com- mittee chairman Pat Johnston told the group. "«So it's not going to ho an annual thing. " Johnston said the proposed ward iâ a big project that will require a large base of support in the- community. The committee wlll ho can- vasslng corporations, local businesses and communlty residents for donatibns. Besides the Optixnist's donation, the committee lias recelved pledges from other communlty organizations in Whltby. The Whitby Brass Band plans to donate 100 per cent of the proceeds from a sprlng concert to the building campalgn, and the Women's Auxi- - liary of the hospital wil run a Monte Carlo niglit at, Heydenshore Pavi- llon- March 25 to raise money for the new ward. The Kiwanis Club of Whltby hopes Wo raise *10,000 for the continu- ing care unit with a 40's and 50's dance at Iro- quois Park featuring the Spitfire Band. More than 300 tickets have already been sold (in just over a week) for the dance. Capacity* is 900 and there will ho a cash bar as well as music from the 20-piece band. The *66,000 ward wil ho located on the presently unused second floor at Dr. J.O. Ruddy and wilIaccommodate up to 32 patients. The empliasis will ho on physical, spiritual and emotional rehabili- tation. Trained physio- therapists and oc- cupational therapists wil provide individual plans that suit the special needs of, each patient. To help patients re- cover emotionally and psychologically, the unit will ho constructed to ho as mucli like home as possible. Brighit colour- ed walls, rugs, plants and facilities that en- courage independent mobility are features planners hope will create a healthy and op- timistie atmosphere. "It is very important to look at these as whole people with social, spiritual and emotional needs, " Mclntosh says. Families of patients will ho encourage W become involved i the patient's program and help with the recovery as mucli as possible. For those who are able, leaving the ward on a short-term basis will ho encouraged. "We want to get rid of the institutional sterili-. ty,"y says Pat Jolinston, chairman of the fund- raising committee. "If you're in there for six months or a year you can get cabin foyer."' Jolinston visited a continuing care ward at York Central Hospital and said the briglit and optimistic atmosphere was lnspiring.
