R ey ol ss_____%- HOCKEY? 1 am on my soap box again. Last Sunday night I watched, or attempted to watch, a boys hockey game at Iroquois Park. I say attempted because I found it quite dlstracting. There was more going on in the stands than there was on the ice. I am nu saint. I get as angry as the next person when I feel a "bad cail" has been made by the officiais on the-ice. 1 do not however jump up and duwn like a mad woman and scream obscenities at the top of my lungs. I am pleased to say that it was not the people from this area that were the cause of the fracous. It was a visiting teamn. Unfortunately, being human, the home crowd started to retaliate with snide com- ments. to opposition fans and jeers to opposition players who received penalties. This was unfor- tunate, but I was witness as to how easily it could happen. A cup of hot coffee was thrown over a Whitby man by a distraught visitur. The language comlng from the mouth of une visiting woman, let alone the men, was enough to curl asaior's hair. This is totally uncalled for. What could have been a good hockey game turned into nothing more than a three-ring circus. No one seems to care for the boys on the ice. They may be playing a rought and tough sport but they are still children. They absorb from their surround- ings as a sponge dues from water. 1 would like te feel that no boy intentionally goes on the ice with the thougt of tripplng, high checking or spearing another player. When they are penalized for their indiscretions they pay the price of sitting out the play and leavlng their team at a disadvantage. They certalnly don't need abuse ftom people in the stan- ds, most of whom have neyer played hockey in their lives. A constant shout from one lady te get a Whitby player out of the game by breaking his neck made me sick. Perhaps these were just wurds and not meant but they were still words that everyone, in- cluding the child in question> could hear. What has this game turned inte' WhoUi responsible to bring it te an end? The referr, the convenor, the presi- dent, who? Someone has got te put an end te this. My hat goes off te Mr. Sorichetti, a referee whu had the good sense at a previous game in Brooklin arena, tu stop a play-off game until an unruly Mark-, ham fan left the ice area. Once this was done the game was continued and the fans and boys on the ice ail participated in what they were there for in the first place. To play hockey. Cume on people, dlean up your act and let the kids do their job. Councillor Ross Bat- ten and Mayor Bob At- tersley voted in favour of extending the street, saying the benefits out- weigh the expected in- crease in traffic and danger to children. "I find there is really only one argument agamnst this and that is increased traffic,I' Bat- ten said. "And there are seven strong arguments for it." Batten said children, must learn not to play on busy streets, and sin- ce there are sidewalks un Reynolds there will be no danger for child- ren walking to school. Attersley. said the reports of earlier dis- cussions have always led him to believe the street would eventually be opened. "I'dbe more concern- ed about the water pro- blems (on Gilbert) be- cause it's a more serious problem,'" At- tersley said. New storm sewers will alleviate problems with water gathering and freezing i Pl Pa prov ai age 2) on Gilbert Street. The matter will be voted on by a full coun- cil meeting next Mon- day.
