13, No. 9 W ednesday, March 2, 1983 36 pages Target date for GO expansi on set back at least two years The planned extension of the GO rapid transit lime mnto Whltby is now scheduled to be operating by 1988, in- stead of 1906, as was originally announced, a GO Transit officiai told WVhitby couneil Iast week. Dave Garner, mana- ger of the GO extension projeet, said preli- minary indications show the earlier com- pletion date for the Ad- vanced Light Rail Tran- sit (ALRT) line* from Pickering to Whitby were unrealistie. The revised sehedule cails for the planning stages -to be completed late this year, with con- struction beginning in the. spring of 1984 and testing of the trains con- ducted in 1907. Garner said GO is considering using a stretch of track between Pickering Beach Road and Henry St. as a test line.1 He actded that GO is considering extending the lime as far as Thorn- ton Road as a first step but that eventually it would be going into the east end of Oshawa. Oshawa learned last week that its portion of the GO extension may be delayed even further by environental hear- ings into the impact of the new rail line. Since the Whitby por- tion of the extension route is along a slim "transportation corri- dor" between the 401 and the CN tracks, the Ministry of, Environ- ment won' sk for assessment hearing in Whitby, a transit officiai explained. When completed, the ALRT link-up with Pickering.GO station is expected to- make it possible for Whitby commuters to reach Toronto's Union Station in 45 minutes.
