Between You and Me MF zmMBy RUTII (OLES Susie bas done it again i Sue Harkness bas raised $1,700 for the Durham Multiple Scierosis Society from her bed in Ajax Pickering Hospital. Tbis is quite a feat and the Society la the benefactor of ber effort. Sue was taken by ambulance on a stretcber to tbe Roll-A-Tbon on the Sunday and wbat a greeting sbe received upon ber arrivai. A great cbeer went Up when tbe dise jockey announced she bad arrived. Wbat an exciing day it must have been for ber and for ber mother and friend Donna. From tbe sublime to thie ridiculous! Italy, sun- sbine, flowers and Italian men but this story will corne later. In thie news these days a lot of talking and writing about prostitution in large cities sucb as Toronto, Vancouver and other centres around tbe world. My knowledge about this topic is very limited, but I wonder wby 50 much money has to be spent and wby this nuisance cannot be abolished tbrougb tbe cour- ts and the police. Most visitors to Amsterdam go to the, famous street, tbe name of whicb I have forgotten, to view tbe scene of red ligbts, large windows, mirrors at thie sides of tbe windows and wemen on display, females of ail ages. Our curiosity drew us some years ago se we yen- tured forth, in a car of course, once Iu the evening and again the next morning only to see the same women in tbe windows, at least the clothes were tbe same. They were able to look in tbe mirror to see the pedestrians as tbey approached on tbe sidewalk from both directions wblch enabled them to pose as tbey saw fit. We were warned to be careful of our cameras and to keep them out. 0f sigbt. At one point as I took a shot of a girl sitting on a stool she saw me and sud- denly threw berseif over backwards on to the floor; my picture censisted of legs pointïng to thie ceiling. She no doubt tbougbt I was a wlfe or someone dangerous te ber security. The strange tblng was that we only saw window shoppers, no one even annroacbed a door. Harmef-s enougb no doubt. Wby cûn we not bave these types contained witbin a certain area and keep them off the streets? Strict medical supervision is important and is made easier under tbese conditions. No longer a threat to citizens on the streets and in cars, tbe customers eau go to them and some might think twice about exposing tbemselves to others in sucb a locality. This is a problem wbicb won't go away and bas te be dealt witb.- I tbink of gas stations in tbe same terms; put tbem, as many as possible on one street or many streets as tbe case may be, and cail tbem Gasoline Alley. Thie following is a silly story but true and after tbe fact funny. One ulgbt at a late hour we arrived in Milan Italy and bad not referred to our $5-a-day book wbicb listed good botels and restaurants; this, 1 migbt add, was some time ago, about twenty years. Too late te cruise around 50 our tbeugbts turned to tbe plice, probably because we saw a police van. Two good looking plain clothes detectives came te our rescue and wbat better guidance could we have, three women alone? Tbree blonde women create quite an interest in this fair country but I wondered why they seemed so amused; this was not the gèneral reaction. They assured us that tbey knew of a "good", clean botel and if we would feilow them in our car they would take us te the door. A dark dimly lit street downtown, few cars around and fewer people wlth the exception of thie odd female standing by a doorway. We had seen a lot of this, especially ln Paris, so I gave littIe thougbt te t and apart from t"i we were tired and maybe not tbinking too clearly. The van stopped aîcross thie road from a uarrow tail building and we drove up and parked too. Thie men told me te go alone and leave the girls An the car; locked ef course. Innocent and naive 1 walked te the door, into a small room witb a counter and a man wbo truly looked as though be would drop dead at the sight of me. A respectable leoking Canadian askiug for ac- commodation for berself and two daugbters!1 "No, ne" be kept saying, "ne ne, notbing"'.HMs English was almost nil and my.Italian as bad but I could say, "the police sent me." lAis look of stark terror really scared me and at this point the girls came i te, find eut wbat bad bappened to me. AUl this time the odd woman came in witb a man wbo showed an I.D. cgrd, signed a paper and upstairs tbey went. One young man's bauds sbook so badly he could bardly write bis name. When I said thie word "police" tbe man in a fran- tic way banged on a bell, shouted until a terrible loeking old madam appeared on thie stairway. She took eue look at us and yelled "ne, ne" and kept yelling. At this pointwe reaily latched on but decid- ed we would see it through and'then quickly escape. After ail, tbere were tbree of us and everytbing we did seemed te be a uew experience. Fînaily thie weman motioned te us te go upstairs te look at a room. We did. Small, filthy one bed, eue chair; we rusbed down and eut finally realizing bow the police bad played a joke on us. The van bad gone, no wbere te be seen s0 away we drove and this time te a gas station. On these occasions our car, a Volkswagen bug, was generally surrounded by men and boys ail eager te look and talk. Thie tank was filled and two bandseme, fine loeking yeutbs came ever, wel spoken and polite they gsked if tbey could belp. Wbat a relief we felt. Tbey knew of a great botel and if we would follow tbem in their beautiful sports car they weuld take us te the deor. Then reason teek over and we realized that this weuld neyer do; w&-must get eut of town because they became very persistent. They followed us it seemed for miles. We found a main bighway and stepped on thie gas. Finally they turned back or we lest tbem.ý After quite a drive we did cerne te a respectable botel in a amail town wbere we stayed and slept well after our ordeal. Neyer again did we arrve in a city at sucb a late heur with nowbere te stay. At least we could say witbout pride that we bad been in a bouse of il repute, an experience we weuld neyer repeat again in our lifetime.
