The Churceh Speaks -Sponsored by the WIIITBY MINISTEIIIAI. ASSOCIATION By REV. GERALD A. HUNT Whitby Baptist Church Don't forget Beth!1 Beth Who? Like Anne Ottenbrite and other young women who grew up in Whitby, Beth found her place in the world away from home. It has been several years since she left home. Who is Beth? Clue: Cullen Gardens would not exist without the vision of her uncle. Elizabeth Cullen, Ken and Bessie's daughter,- could be lost in the crowd. With herquiet ways, she is anything but flamboyant. Yet joy and purpose is written into lier face and personality. Beth represents the Whitby Baptist Church and the Canadian Baptist Overseas Mission Board (CBOMB) in Vuyyuru, Andrha Pradesh, India. She was secretary of the Bethel Hospital. Now as direc- tor of a community health program she heads a team of six workers who cover Vuyyuru and four other towns. Beth carnies on a well-baby clinie for about 100 mothers, a tuberculosis diagnostic and follow-up program with up to two years of recovery support, and on the side vaccinates about 200 per- sons against measies every week. Beth is found every Sunday in the local Baptist church where she supports the Indian pastor and his people. Beth is a deeply dedicated Christian. This explainis her motivation and purpose. Her attitude and work speak for themselves and challenge other young people to do something courageous, unselfisli and purposeful with their lives. CBOMB requires real evidence of a Christian ex- perience and caîl to mission service. Governments overseas justifiably ask for other qualifications. Beth is an "R.N., B.N.Sc." with her training from McMaster University and the Tropical Disease Hospital, Liverpool, England. Daily on-the-job experience working with Dr. Dorothy Timpany (who received the Order of Canada for her long and distinguished career) has considerably enriched her training and assured her welcome to a land with many medical and spiritual needa. With Beth's kind of dedication CBOMB has been working with Telegu and Soara people for well over a century. Epidemics, crop failures and typhoons have brought a willing response from churches of the Baptist Federation of Canada. British and American Baptists, who have been working for almost. two centuries in India, share the eastern coastal areas with the Canadians.f Beth's home church in Whitby contributes part of her salary, underwrites some hospital projects in Vuyyuru, sends bandages and food packets and f prays for her daily.s That's our Beth!$ WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 16, 1983, PAGE 15 Psych volunteers prepare for dance The Volunteer Association of Whitby Psychiatric Hospital is preparing for its annual Snowflake Bail to be held at the Ajax Community Centre Feb. 26. Can the Council help me with my goals? Can I lie useful in my neighbourhood? These are sorne of the questions I receive from you and this week maybe I can answer them for you. The Council and the staff are here to serve you in your best interests and those of the community. I am aware that this is hard to believe if Council, on your first try, does not see fit to give you its ap-, proval. But in our system there are many doors that the Municipal Act allows to try and keep the communication open for progress. The Mayor and Council are always approachable for your suggestions. The staff simply are employ- ed to follow Council's directions and if successful arguments can lie made to Council, staff will follow suit. This lias been a tried procedure in Municipal Government. Improvements are always being made. So if not successful on the first try, try again. Whitby is blessed to have so many people who give of their time and efforts to work on boards and committees, and although not everyone gets to sit on a committee, many find it a pleasant task to help with our programs for young and older folks.
