PAGE 6, WEDNESDAY JANUARY 19, 1983, WHITBY FREE PRESS Ashe tells PC's economy taking a turn for the better The Annual Meeting of the Brooklin & Dis- trict Progressive Con- servative Association was held at the Brooklin Community Centre, Cassels Road, Brooklin, on Wednesday, Jan. 12. The President, Bob Car- son, gave a very full ac- count of the activities of both the Durham West Provincial Association and the Ontario Riding Federal Association, during the past year. The guest speaker, Hon. George Ashe, was introduced by Barbara Parrinder. George gave a summary of his views on the economy. He felt the economy was beginning to take a turn for the better, but we still had problems ahead of us. Our inter- est rates are still above those in the U.S. Our in- flation is running at about twice the rate in the U.S., and our pro- ductive efficiency is running behind many other countries. Our dollar currently at 81¢ U.S. is helping our ex- port markets, but if this gets up around the 90¢ level, we will lose a lot of this advantage. He pointed out there is a great challenge ahead of us for Government business and labour to get together and co- operate to overcome the economic problems. George then switched to the current trust com- panies' problems, and said he hoped we would have more answers within the next few weeks. Following a question from the floor, George * WHITBY KIDS * & * BROOKLIN KIDS M Here are some of the routes available now! NDP sets objectives Three objectives for 1983 were set by the Durham West NDP riding association exe- cutive at its first meet- ing of the new year recently. They are: • winning public support for NDP alternatives for economic recovery, e increasing member- ship and fund-raising activity for the purpose of e preparing successful campaigns in the next federal and provincial elections expected in 1984 and 1985. "The Roman Catholic bishops' statement has caused people to start questioning the lack of economic logic behind the federal and provin- cial government poli- cies that are impacting so harshly on families, small businesses and farming," said riding president Hugh Pea- cock. He also pointed to the bishops' concern over the quashing of the fundamental right of collective bargaining in what is supposed to be a democratic society. Other executive mem- bers for 1983 are Ed Halpin, Pickering, vice president; Pam Daw- son, Whitby, treasurer; Bernie Emoff, Picker- ing, membership; Am- by Ferren, labour liai- son; Marg Klym, Pickering, Gordon McKay, Ajax, and Drummond White, Whitby, members-at- large; Reid Rusonik, youth liaison and Sharon Tobin, Whitby, delegate to the NDP area council. Brok rin Byl ines By ROXANNE REVELER Call 655-4951 with items for this column. Hi there: Why is it when men are outgoing and forthright they are known to be ambitious and "macho". When women act in the same manner they are pushy and unfeminine? A WORD FROM THE SCOUTS Thanks Brooklin1 Once-again the Brooklin Scout- ing Association would like to thank the residents of Brooklin for making their "Bottle Day" a great success. HELP YOUR LOCAL KIDS In the next little while, kids will be coming to your door asking you to buy dog licences. This is not a con game. Students from the Anderson School band and the boys Rugby team are selling dog licences for the same price you will pay from the Town of Whitby. The only difference is the students will get a commission of $1.50 on each one they sell from the town to enable them to subsidize various trips taken through the school. For instance the Rugby team will be going to England, Wales and possibly France in March to represent this area. As you know costs are going up all the time. Help the students in your area by supporting them. You have to buy a dog licence anyway (remember the Town has your name on file as a pet.owner) so buy them from a student. If perchance no one has been able to reath you at home and you would like-to buy a dog tag please cail 655-4951. We will locate the student living closest to you and have them drop by. Thanks Brooklin. KINSMEN WINNER Brooklin and District Kinsmen Club wish to an- nounce that the winner of the "wheel barrow of cheer" draw was Mrs. A. Carson, 19 Baldwin Street, Brooklin.
