The Christmas spirit was alive and well last Wednesday at General Motor's Whitby South Plant, where more than 150 employees gathered to donate toys and enjoy a turkey dinner. "It's overwhelming when you see aIl these people coming out and supporting the Saivation Army, y Captain Roy Randel of- the Oshawa Salvation Army told GM employees at the din- ner. "If there's anything good ^about bad: econo- mic times, it is that people are pulling to- gether, " Randeil said. *GM em ployees have made it an annual tradi- tion to donate toys and cash fromý the turkey- dinner to help the Salva- tion Army f111 ils Christ- mas hampers. For $5, employees en-, joyed a turkey cinner, entertainent by three clowns from Ontario Place, and the chance to win a Christmas'turkey, draw. Left over funds from the dinner are donated to the Salvation Army. Last year, about $500 from the Whitby South Plant was donat- ed for Christmas hamp- ers., To, make the dinner a special event, orgamizer Jim Shaw invited three clowns from Ontario Place, who entertained the group with antics and music fromn their three-piece band. The purpose of the toy drive was brought home when two-year-old Alex- ander Lawson Deil, the grandson 0f a retired GM employee, sat on Santa's knee and opened a Christmas'gift. Hun- _dreds of small faces will light up like Alexander's this year because of donations to the toy drive. The toy drive is thriv- ing at another toy outlet' in Whitby. Last Thurs- day, Whitby Firefight- ers donated almost 100 toys ai McDonalds on Thickson Road. 1The firefighters use funds from dances and other -fund-raising acti- vities staged allI year long to buy toys for the drive. Toys received by the Salvation Army are dis- tributed to needy fami- lies along* with -food hampers. This year, the number of people need- ing hampers,ïs more than ever before. Volunteers package the hampers, and pick toys that suit the age and interest of the child- Capt. Randeli said the response to the drive thîs year lias been very good, with people phon- ing and requesting to sponsor needy familles.
