The king learnas he can no longer depend on royal prerogatives. Each step takes hlm further into obscurlty and humble dependence on the limited resources of his situation.~ When God inJesus Christ "1took flesh and lived among us" (St.,John 1:,14) he became a "ldepen-. dent". It was typical of God to use the natural human processes and events for his purpose. No longer could pýeople insist that God was aloof, de- tached and indifferent. He plunged into a world where everyone has some kind of -crutches and de- pendencies. " IHow many dependence do you have?"' asked the questionnaire. The typist's error raises the question of our self-sufficiency. Some of our friends "enjoy" il-health much of the time, using it as an excuse for avoiding things, the flesh standing in the way 0f real and abundant life. That kind of dependence was not in the purpose of Jesus' incarnation. Some forms 0f dependence are slavery - bondage to things or sel f. Being a servant of God means being -freed from that bondage. Serving others begins when we gain mastery over ourselves. Speaklng of addiction, have you noticed that greed and appetite have no place ln the Christmas spirit? When God ln Christ took flesh and lived among us hie came not to be served. He. took the form of a servant. Though he made large demands on hie disciples, there was no lust for power. They felt amply rewarded in their service and deeply ob- ligated for his involvement ln their lives.' The essence of Christmas ln interdependence. God entrusted himself to a human'family in far- from-ideal conditions. Among his disciples. he called for a large measure of mutual trust, rellance on him and co-peration with God'1s sovereign will. This was-the basis of a new covenant. .> It is no accident that Christmas is giving and re- ceiving, reconciliation, famifly togetenesan»e sponse to human neede.- We are not'ashamed or reluctant to be lovingly dependent on one. another when we understand why Christ came. If you have been embittered by some experience it may be logical for you to live aloof from society, nursing a defiant rage, living with guard doge behind a' tail fence. You may have plenty of com- pany if you are hyper and suspicious about those around you. But'these attitudes are far removed from the spirit of Chifistmas, which threatens to in- volve you deeply in the human family and bring you face to face with Christ. "For unto you is bonm. a Saviour who is Christ the Lord!" A couple of visitors to Barney Miller's, police sta- tion declare their faith: "It's only people like us who are seif-sufficient who are goinig to survive!1" Actually they are bristling wtih firearms, so much they are a menace to society. You don't have to own firearme to be ail wrapped up in your survival and be arrogantly -and callously indifferent to others, not caring whether they live or die, or even whether you have caused their death. That attitude includes more of us than you may think. We contribute to it in many ways, as we throw responsibility and ac- countability to the winds. The Christian teachig about salvation le that sur- vival depends umiquely on our relationship with God and our interdependence with God and his people in a covenant, to trust and help one another, and not just at Christmas!
