Re pojrtfrom Queen' sPark fwmm By The Hon. George Ashe, MPP (PC - Durham West) Ontario Minister of Revenue In this week's report, I would like to highlight the Ontario Association of Family Service Agencies which represents the 42 family service agencies ac- tive within the province. Thèse agencies, were founded by citizens concerned about the nuniber of families which were adversely affected by the pres- sures of changing family structure, shifting family values and increased economic stress. Through family service agencies counselling is provided in the areas of marital confliets, child rais- ing, famuly relationships such as those' i-nvolving aging parents, and problems of a personal nature. Family service counsellors receive training to' enable. them to reach out and provide emotional support to individuals without losing their object- ivity. Objectivity i essential in the counselling process...in assessing the nature of the problem, in suggesting ways in which the client can work through their problem and in ensuring that al famlly members are treated fairly., A sympathetic famuly counsellor often enables a person to vent his or her true feelings, release ten- sion and permnits the person involved in the conflict to view the situation more clearly. In ail cases, the success of the counselling process depends upon the motivation of ail those invoived. Counselli ng is Most effective when a couple, or famuly, seeks assistance at the first sign of a problem when their determination to resolve the issue is strongest. Family life programs, provided by many of the family agencies, discuss natural events which, by their very nature, bring stress. These events in- clude: marriage, child rearing, the teen years, mid- life crises, aging, death of a spouse or remarriage. In addition, many agencies have expanded their family life programs to include life skills for the newly separated. The Family Counselling Service of -the Regional Municipality 'of Durham has offices in Ajax- Pickering, Beaverton, Bowmanville, Cannington,, Oshawa, Port Perry, Uxbridge and Whitby. The Ajax office, is located at 138 Commercial Avenue and can be reached by calling 683-1451. The Whitby office is located'at Fairview Lodge, Dundas* Street West; telephone number., 668-1421.' The Pickering office is Iocated at 1355 Kingston Road in the Sheridan Mail., It can be reached by phoning 831-2424. Family counselling agencies strive to meet the special needs of families in the community as iden- tif ied by its voluntary Board of Directors or by the counselling staff. The main aim of each agency is to maintain family unity while providing the neces-* sary life skills for people to function on their own.. The executive director of the Ontario Association of Family Service Agencies, Patty Anne Pugsley, stresses: "If only people would get help when they recognize that there is-a problem, instead of waiting until it's almost too late, we could prevent s0 much more family breakdown. It's really very easy to get in touch with a counsellor ... the agencies are listed in the Yellow Pages under Marriage and Family Counselling. One need only telephone for an ap-, pointment."' As our personal weIl-being affects ail aspects of our lives and those around us, I would like to take this opportunity to offer my personal congratula-* tions to the staff of the Family Counselling Services of Durham Region and the work that they are doing to benefit ah 0of us. 1,0 %0.d as e e e o il eric rpar.'
