WI-ITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11,1982, PAGE 13 The Churcéh Speaks Saiing away Now this ws a picture of wbat summer in Wbitby w ail about. Last Saturday afternoon, the harbor was ful of activity as summer saiors took their craft out for a spin on Lake Ontario. Frgm our pbotographer's vantage point at tbe end of one of the break- waters, there were ail kinds of boats stretched out for as far as the ýeyecould see. HUNT Pastor Whltby Baptist Church With its theme "lTurning the Tide" the Baptist Federation 0f'Canada met recently i Moncton, where every day the tidal bore marches upriver, driving its waters backward. The -prime question was whether there can be a dramatie reversai of tbe tide in our society, beginming with a spiritual renewal in our churches. In bis greetings, Premier Richard Hatfield said, "The Baptist faith has had a long and distingulshed bistory; it bas done much to enrich the 111e of this nation." In bis remarks the lieutenant-governor of New ]Brunswick highligbted some Baptist contribu- tions to' the province's history. About 2,800 repre- sentatives from churches across Canada celebri, ted Dominion (Canada) Day with pipers, a parade of flags and a historîcal pageant. Federation presi- dent, Dr. Jerry Zeman spoke of the greatness of the occasion, but asked the questiori "Can God turn tbe tide?", suggesting that our churches are losing their ability to lift and mold their communities. - From ail reports we live in a world tbat is over- powering. On the far horizon are the clouds of tbe arms race and world poverty and bunger. Closer are economic and social problemis tbat are beyond control. Nearer stilfiIs our own malaise: we bave exppcted too much and contributed too littIe to our system. Our contribution bas often missed tbe mark. Claude Taylor, president of Air Canada and a. Baptist layman, ýsaid in his address that the intellec- tuais of our time bave failed to understand spiritual values. We bave sougbt our solutions i the wrong places. We bave tried in our national life to give political and econo mic answers to the question of sin, several speakers said, wben we should, be talking boldly about what God was doinig i Jésus Christ to save the world from sin and give persons new 111e through him. Christ is the starting point for turning the tide. Athelsm, wbich bardly existed in 1900, is widespread today and this unbellef leads to a dearth of spiritual and moral standards and breakdown of support for many parts of our social structure. So we are our own enemy. As someone said, "We have seen the enemy and it's us!" This -is 'the systemn we helped create 1 Turning the tide i the spiritual life of our nation 50 we may regain wholeness and bave the hope of salvation begins in eacb life tbrough personal repentance. Eacb of us has to be sorry enough and alarmed enougb to turn back on the si and failure of the past. As we reacb out for renewalwe come to the step of commitment and disciplesbip, saying as ancient King Hezekiah said, "Lord, I will live for you, for you alone. " Sucb a -total commitment to God will help ail tbose other comrnitments wbich bave to be whole-bearted if we are going to turn the church and the nation around. There is a tide in the affairs 0f men, Which, taken, at the flood, leads on to fortune;. Omitted, ail the voyage of their life Is bound in sballows and i miseries. -Shakespeare This tbeft can only be described as a little kisky. Accordig to a spokes- man for the Durbam Regional Police Force, a person or persons un- known' slid open the front window of Nigbt Moods -Ic. of Byron Street South somethne during the niglit of August 2 and 3.
