From now on the Town of Whitby wili pay a $200 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons damaging town parks. Last Friday morning, Mayor Bob Attersley (on the ladder) put the finish- ing screw to the first reward sign to be postedin the town. It is located in Rotary Centennial Park at the corner of Brock and Burns Street. Looking on is Regfonal Councillor Gerry Emm and Constable Ian Wootton of the Durham Regional Police Force, 18 Division (Whitby). According to acting director of parks and recreation Fred Beckett, the town will post 56.such signs in parks throughout the town. Winter, a resident of Whitby for 27 years, will succeed Shirley Acker, who bas been secretary- manager for the past seven years. A director of the Cliamber from 1972 to 1976, Winter was in charge of the chamber's newsletter and served on several committees. According to co-owner Bil Cocker, the service responded to 33 routine cails and to 30 standby cails for other ambu- lance services in Osbawa and Ajax. A reporter on Whitby news for the Osbawa Times and the Whitby Free Press from 1970 to 1979, lie eurrentiy writes a column on Whitby's history for the Times. As secretary-mana- ger for the Chamber of Commerce, Winter bopes to continue a commitment he -bas made to the Town of Whitby for the past dozen years to serve the community which lias been -his home since 1955. Tuesday, August 3, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.rn. they will be creating a rnysterious craft and Thur- sday, August 5.get set for adventure movies. The week of August 9 will be "Things That Fly" week. On Tuesday, August 10 they will be designing a "Flying Craft". On Thursday, August 12 it's blast off tirne with "Air Devil" movies, plus comedy. On- Friday, August 13, they are planning a U.F.O. workshop. You have probabiy realized by now that I: bave no time for people who let their dogs run loose around the town. You also know. that I have a dog of my own, so don't flash back tbat 1 arn a dog bater. There is possibly the largest doberman on the face of the eartb whieh constantlyruns througb the streets of our town. I wish it didnt. This animal does flot even wear a collar, soIl don't know how its owner could tether it in the first place. This animal is not to be frigbtened away. It stands its ground. I don't know if it would bite, but T am not about to take the chance of findinig out. I know that we have to corne indoors when this' animal shows up and wait until it goes away. This is ridiculous. It is not the'animal's fault., It is the fault of ils- irresponsible owner who lets this obnoxious animal roam at will. I hope they read this, or that anyone who reads it and knows tliem will hand them this ar- ticle.
