The Church Speaks Sponsored by the WHITBY MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION, w By THE REV. KEITH A. ELFORD Pastor Whltby Fre Methodist Church Suppose you were one of the New Testament writers. Have you ever considered the fantasticý assignment that tbey had? Some of them weren't even around to seefor themselves. Dr. Luke begins bis account witb the humble confession tbat he is writing from what was handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses. He, like us,. had to depend on the reports of eyewitnesses - those who knew because they were there. His medical mind, sbarpened by years of study for the discipline of diagnosis, would quickly ferret- out any questionable tripe. His work would have to be the result of a thorough investigation. But he had some pretty fantastic tbings to re- search didn't he? Medical miracles - blind people saw, lame people walked, the deaf heard, lepers were rid of their cancerous spots.' Probably the most uxibelievable was the rising from the dead of the crucified Christ. But the eyewitnesses said they saw it ail. On the last subject, the resurrection, they said that they saw Jesus put to deatb and then tbey saw Min, toucbed Hi m, visited with Hlm, even sbared a meal with Him. Paul, another researcher, whose' academic training can not be easily discounted, reported'to- the Corintbian Christians that on tbis same topic of the resurrection, he had verifiable evidence that Jesus "appeared to-Peter, then to the Twelve. After that to mnore than five hundred of the brothers at the same time. " (I Cor. 3:5) When John, one of the aposties, writes bis first let- ter (wbich you find near the end of the New Testa- ment), he saturates bis introductory paragraph with tbis assertion: "I am writing to you about what I bave seen and heard and touchedy He was anticipating the cymecs among bis readers. Sitting bere in the twentieth century, some of the New Testament accounts are almost incredible.' Dead people usuaily don't come back to 111e. Serious medical conditions usually don't disappear in an instant. But then, we bave the reports of the eyewitnesses. V've read the research on wbat they say they saw. 1 believe it. How about you? The harbor park was filled to capacity with over 105 recreational vebicles from ail over Canada and the United States. In fact, some of the biggest delegations to the rally came flot only from, the Lone Star State but from Cali- fornia, Arizona, Florida and Iowa. In fact, according to Royal Rovers interna- tional president Lyle Thomas, it was appro- priate that the lOth in- ternational rally was held in Whitby., I t seems that the first such rally was held in Wbitby in 1972. 1The purpose of the club Tomas explains is to "get together and have fun.
