You cough and spit. If you're a heavy smoker, it could be chromce bronchitis. Chronce bronchitis is nearly always associated with heavy cigarette smoking. It's likely to start in middle age and get worse as the years go on> unless you seek help from a doctor early on. About, three timnes as rrýany men get chromc bronchitis' as womnen. Most'peopie with chronic bronchitis live in cities where air pollution is a problem. The lung association says that because peo- pie don't consider chronic bronchitis a kiuling disease, it is of- ten neglected until it is in an advanced stage and there is serious damnage to the lungs. But in 1981, approxi- mately 700,000 people suffered from chronic bronchitis., It la estimated that more than 30,000 people develop- chronic bron- chitis every year. And many people are forced to draw disabillty bene- fit s because of their bronchitis. Undoubted- ly, chronie bronchitis is one of the nation's cost- liest diseases in terms of manpower, money and misery. Since people who get chronic bronchitis are nearly always smoking, the cough is usuaily dis- missed as only "smoker's cough". As time goes on, though, colds become more damaging. 'Coughing and spitting last longer after each . cold. Soon they're with the victim ail the time - before colds, during colds, af- ter colds. Generaily the cough 'is worse in -the morning and evening and in -cold, damp weather. If your winter cold lingers, see your doctor. He or she can heip you enjoy the spring and summer.
