Cot $ 75,000.... Whitby's 'classy' new info centre now open Last week local, re- gional and provincial politicians gathered at the corners of Brock and Burns Streets to offi- cially open the Town of Whitby's newest indus- try'- the tourist infor- mation centre. Both Durham Region- al Chairman Gary Herrema and Ontario Minister of Revenue George Ashe hailed ils opening ,as a sign 'of Whitby's progress. The $75,000 facillty was built by Whitby Town Coundil to inform visitors or anyone else about the town and al that it bas to offer. "The statistics prove that the tourist industry in this area is growmng," Ashe said, "A tourist building such as this is a big plus." Mayor Bob Attersley told the smallý crowd in attendance that the cen- tre will leave a lot of iponey in town. "We bope visitors will leave a lot of money in rest- aurants and other down- town stores," he said. Herrema told the audience' that Whitby doesn't watt around for .things to happen, it makes things happen. "We're wondering what's next, " he . said, "Everytbing done here with a little more class, a little more style." Herrema said that the building is "'gonna get the people off 'Main Street Ontario (Hi'gh- way 401) and onto Main» Street, Whitby..",» >Also present was For- bes 'Doc' McEwen, making bis final public appearance before. re- tiring, as* the town's director 6f special pro- jects. Calling it "a real proud .day", ,McEwen said that the centre would prove to be "a sales tool of the cominu- nity, for the community and by the community. " McEwen said that the centre will be an ex- cellent way to introduce future home buyers and business owners to Whitby and what it can offer. Speaking to You By SCOTT FENNELL, M.P. (PC - Ontario) Budget blues The discouraging thing about Allan MacEachen's latest budget speech was its defeatist attitude. The finance minster started off by absolving* bis government of blame for our economic mess. He accused the rest of the world of ganging up on Canada to cause the near-deprèssion we are pre- sently in ýand he accused his feilow Canadians of causing inflation.' He then admitted that-he had no policies which would ixnprove Canada's economy. He did, how- ever, proudly boast that he bad policies which will keep the situation from getting worse. These policies, he says, will stay in place until the rest of the world decides to stop gangîng up on Canada and until bis fellow Canadians decide to stop causing in- flation. MacEacheri's significant policies can be divided into two categories: tax decreases which will be talked about and which might take place in the fail; tax increases which will not be talked about and which will take effect immediately. The budget ignored completely the energy con- cerns of Western Canada and *Newfoundland.. It asked Ronald Reagan to reduce the American defi- cit even though Canada's is proportionately twice as large. The budget refused to acknowledge a link between inflation and government spending. In- stead, it told my middle-income constituents they are greedy. Because my constituents are greedy, the budget de-indexes the tax systemn so that-they are punished by inflation and the government bene- fits by it. MacEachen's November budget contained many punitive taxes on middle-income Canadians and on umail businesses. MacEachen's June budget leaves these unchanged. MacEachen's November budget projected a deficit of $10.5 billion. McaEachen's June budget projects a deficit of $19.6 billion.hI November he told us the economny would grow by 2 per cent. In June, he tells us the economy will shrink by 2 per cent. I November employmeiit was goîng to grow by 1.6 per cent. Today, 1,250,000 Canadians are fficially out of work. The middle clams of this country bas only one hope that an election be called and the governmeiit changed. This probably woni't happen for two more years and I think it is quite possible there may not be a middle class left by then. lil have more to say about the-.budget in next week's column. The Information cen- tre will have'informa- tion booklets, wash- rooms for both people and pets and four help- fuI young people to an- swer any questions. Whitby products will also be featured at the centre including Stokely Van Camp's Gaterade,> which will be provided frée to weary travellers and'chesterfields to rest upon- furnished by the e; Sklar Furniture Comn-, pany.
