PAGq6 WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30) 1982, WHITBY FREE PRESS ]Report from Q ueen'S Park By The Hon. George Ashe, MPP (PC - Durham West) e Ontario Minister of Revenue Survival guide Unscrupulous..salespeople and con-artists often regard senior citizens as easy targets for unneeded home repairs, questionable foreign land deals and high pressure door-to-door selling. The "Seniors Survivýal Guide", prepared by. the Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations, ANNOUNCEMENTS RECEPTION CARDS INVITATIONS THANK YOU CARDS I NTN 21 HAW-DA contains.a summary of Ontario's most common scams as well as pamphlets explaiming the schemes in detail and offering advlce on avoidlng being "rip- ped off. " Foreign land sales are discussed and the potential consumer is cautloned to take the necessary steps to ensure that he/she is protected. If, for example, you are being pressured by a salesperson to purchase a piece of property which you have flot seen, say "no" until you have consulted a lawyer about the contract and are satisfied that the location and the property are what you really want. In this case, the best defence is to make the necessary arrangements to visit the property before you invest. It should be noted that developers seiling property in Ontario are required to file and have accepted, a prospectus of the property with the Ontario Registrar of Real Estate and Business Brokers. A foreign land inspector then visits the property to en- sure that An accurate description bas been regist- ered and, if everytbing is in order, will provide the developer with a Certificate of Acceptance. But, remember, a Certificate of Acceptanc 'e does flot mean that the' property has governent app'roval'- the role of thegovernment is to ensure tbat the facts are available to the consumer in order that they can. make an informed'finanicial decision. The phony bank ýinspector is a scheme which many citizens indicate they would not be tempted to become involved in. Unfortunately, people involved in this type of operation often sound legitimate, are able to produce official-looking documents and are able to obtain the consumer's mioney before the con- sumer realizes what bas happened. By then, it is too late. If you are approached about your banking prac- tices, becbme suspicious and -cail the police imme- diately. It is better to be safe than sorry. Food freezer plans may sound like a good idea, particularly with increasing food costs and fixed in- THE CORPORATION 0F THE TOWN OF WH ITBY The Planning Act NOTICE 0F THE PASSINGO0F A BY..LAW BY THE CORPORATION 0F THE TOWN 0F WHITBY TO RIEGULATE LAND USE PURSUANT TO SECTION 390OF THE PLANNING ACT TAKE NOTICE that the Councl of the Town of Whitby ha s passed By-laws 1388-82 and 1389-82 on the fourteenth day of June, 1982, pursuant to the provi- sions of Section 39 of The Plan ni ng Act. But some food freezer plans can turn out to be more costly than you expected, so examine the plan carefully before signing anything. As a con- sumer, you should not be afraid to admit that you do not understand, po ask questions and do not settle for vague answers. A reputable company will be more than pleased to provide clear answers. Involvement in pyramid sehemes has been a more recent fad in the province. Participation may cause consumers to lose their initial investment and could result In a two-year jail term or fines up to $10,000. Suffice tosay, that pyramid sales schemes, whlch involve selling distributorships to those who seil further-distributorships, are now illegal ini On- tario. Another potential threat to unwary consumers is presente d by door-to-door salespeople who may be friendly and helpful, wbile they.seil you sometbing that you do not need. These suggestions are given to consumers when dealing with door-to-door salespersons: 1. Ask for identification. 2. Do not accept a free offer - this may encourage a return visit. S3. Do not sign something just to get rid of the salesperson - it may be a contract. 4. Never pay cash. 5. Do not be afraid tosay "no". Informatiîin presented in the "Seniors Survival Guide" b as been prepared to increase the - con- sumer's. awareness of the types -of schemes wbich they should avoid.
