What a cosy time in cottage country, snuggied down by the fire while you listen to the rain drops on the window pane! We have been watching the wild life for a few weeks while wondering .liow they feel about the weather. So far, so good, because the birds rather soggy and bedraggled are stili about, the rabbits are stili feasting on plants and the chipmunks as always are over exerting themselves. We have been trying to cultivate a couple of Chip- pies, an easy task. Now we wonder if we are foolish! First of ail, we put our sunflower seeds out which we eat in salads and ail sorts of foods; soîne on a bench by a door, others by a small pool and some rocks. Now I read that they like to live under a pile of rocks. Within an hour, we had a pair and within less than a haif-hour ail the seeds had gone. So far s0 good, we had them, hoping they would stay, around and perform for a small granddaughter. Close to one of these locations by steps and a small desk, a bird feeder and a large cow bell hang- ing from the tree our chippies hang out. One day, I saw the female on her hind legs looking long and hard at the tree and the feeder. Lt was easy to deter- mine her thoughts; would she start from the ground and run up the tree or would she try to leap up? The final result was -a run up the tree. From there she would at times jump on the bell so at the crack of dawn I would hear, "ding dong" and know her mor- ning had begun. At other times, she would jump down on some amber glass used for decorative pur- poses and* then the 'cracking and breaking would begin. I say she because the littie one ventured for- th first; the maie soon caught on and foiiowed suit. After reaching the bird feeder both littie feet would go in and under the glass as they pulied the seed out. In this feeder there is ruby glass and it too toppled to ,the ground, intact which is a good thing because colôured glass is difficuit to buy now and expensive. Repairs are constant and soon we, will have to make new ones. When shopping for bird feeders some time ago 1 used to ask if they had any broken oneà in the stock room. Their fate was usuaily the trash bin but if bought at a reduced, price they could be repaired and put togood use. Thanks to a reader who cailed to tell me where to get hurniringbird seed (thistle seed) which is now avallable in Canada. For the moment I can't think1 of the name of the dealer in Thornhiil but everyone up there probably knows as they are so weil known in that area. Thanks to a neighbour who filled me in about the Baltimore Oriole. I couldn't understand why they refused any and ail bird seed. A simple answer to that, they don't eat*seed, only insectsl He showed me a nest, basket like, hanging from a willow tree right by our driveway and told me of another one. What was wrong with me? Why didn't I use rny head? I suppose we have two funny morning doves; ail the other doves act like birds. These two walk or rather hop up severai steps, orange carpeted s ,teps, to a small deck. They are sedate and slow. A good background for these pretty birds but not much to my liking as"birds at close range scare me and I don't like their fluttering wings, a view, I find, many people share. Sam, our pretty littie beige lion, a chihuahua, with long hair'shares the area with them. He stares at them, while they ignore hirn unless he gets up and walks too close, then they fly away. We often watch Sam as he sits and listens intently to the bird songs. His head goes up and he turns froîn side to side sure we feel that the birds are talking to him. Birds wiil often dive at dogs who chase them and make their lives a misery because thedogs are ground oriented. Thankfully for Sam he is neyer tempted and because he only weighs about two pounds he might be badly hurt. We won- der about hawks though and hope they won't mistake him for something else, swoop down and carry him away. Rabbits are pretty and ioveiy to see in thé garden but ail they do is destroy.- We try to protect every- thing but find that is quite impossible. In reality I am toid they have smail tumours ail over their bodies, worse some years than others. One thing I do know is that they are'covered with fleas and probabiy lice. Not too pleasant to hold and euddle.' Domestic rabbits are another thing, generailyédean and healthy. I heard they are breeding tiny, miniature ones now who can live inside or out. Nature provides predators to keep things in balance but sometimes the balance gets out of kilter. Wild animais are often a sorry lot but much admired at a distance. Our modern zoos provide a haven and one could say a health spa for many varieties'of creatures. Properly fed with vitamin supplements if needed and good medicai care most of them thrive in. a healthy environxnent. About ten years ago, I remember sitting in lush tropical California gardens and thinking how won- derful it wouid be to have such large magnificent ferns at home. For years I* coilected ferns froîn here and there, Gait, Owen Sound, Acton and- Muskoka. They ail thrive and spread and every spring I mean to really thin them out and put theni in another location. I do but neyer enough. No DANFOTHTsPWRT -IME LACESL Recndtine * '-US e s elcrc&mnel ulgaat e. 55 10% dicount hiome building values in Ontaro! 11/ r~yThe Most Energy Efficient r$C Humes Un Americia M
