We reserve the right to lmit quantities.M , Cîvie pride is some- thing that Forbes j McEwen -knows a lot * about. * For the past 28 years, * he has taken pride in this community and IL was on that subject he 0 addreased the- Whitby Chamber of Commerce last week. McEwen - who has always been known as 'Doc' - will retire next week as the Town of R Whitby's director of spe- cial projects. When he first came to work for the town it was as deputy. clerk-treasur- er but. since then has held practically every post in the town's management structure includtng welfare offi- cer and planning offi- cer. In, introducing him to the chamberý, town ad- ministrator Bull Wallace said McEwen ta "going to be sorely missed as aý member of our manage- ment team."t During lits brief talk to the chamber, McEwen's love of this communtty was plain for ail to see as he talked about civic pride and the number of forma IL can take. "Civie pride can take many forma, " he said, "often, it is juat waiting Lo be tapped. " As an example, McEwen- reminded the chambèr of the feats of the old Whitby Dunlopa hockey team that went out to win the world championahip in 1958 by defeating the Soviet Union. During the Dunnies' heyday, le satd that the whole community tur- ned out at every home and away-game to cheer the players - including now Mayor Bob ALLer- sley - to victory. "You could hardly buy season's tickets," McEwen said "The communiLy was totalled involved."1 A* wide and seasoned traveller, McEwen, told the chamber that civic pride makes such thinga as the Calgary Stamp- ede and the Stratford Festival a succesa. .While lie had an in- strumental role in plan- ning Whitby's growth dwing the last few years, McEwen worries that- growtng too big may cause Whttby to lose some of its com- munity spirit or civile pride. "The larger a muni- cipality grows, the hard- er it is to maintain civlc pride," he told his audience adding that while there 'sla "no guarantee" this 'wiil happen, he felt sure of iL., Using Brooklin as. an example, McEwen said Lhta is a fine example of people ,becoming -in- volved in their cominu- ntty througli such things as the Brooklin Spring Fair and supporting the Brooklin Redmen, a local lacrosse Leam. When iL grows, McEwen fears iL will not see a complementary growtli in commumty involvement. "In fact, the reverse might very weil, develop." He alao, told the cham- ber that Whitby has many things upon whicli to, build iLs sense of commumty and pointed to the County Town Singera, the Peter Perry Award and the County Town Carnival. "These are all ex- pressions of civic prid e," McEwen satd. But, the town cannot alone instill civic pride lie continued adding that it was up to organi- zations sucli as the chamber of commerce as well as individuals to do so. "The town'la provid- ing the basic tools, but the communtty bas to do the work," -lie said ad- dig that the adoption of the marigold as the CONT'D ON PG. 10 w M M M M M M -I ~.1 s M a u a M M M a M M u M oeuf Civie pride the key ITt THE COVERINO TH'eêOUNT in the ro'ofing, business 24yea rs of 24 Quality, Service, Satisfaction 723*9022 or 723 5731 In aur estimation, we have the best price
