Councl Col'umnn Subinitted by members of WHITBY-TOWN COUNCIL By REGIONAL COUNCILLOR TOM EDWARDS >.Chairman, Recreation Department One- of the fine tbings about living in a town. like Whitby is the effect that one person can have on the 111e-îôf our community. It is flot necessary to bave rank or honors to be acclaimed in a town like ours.' There are men and women of our community who have neyer run for public office, but whose contri- bution is more lasting than many who were elected. Such a personwas the late Luther Vipond of Whitby, or-as he would have preferred it, of Brooklin. Hund- reds of residents of our town came to the funeral parlour last week to pay tribute to bis efforts, par- ticularly to the young people i n the sports 111e of this arèa for more than 50 years. Our deepest sympathy goes to the Vipond family, and it 1$ hoped that the respect he is accorded might lessen the pain of his passing. Luther is one of a number of people who have made a lasting contribution in various sporting ac- tivities, and who have passed away in the last year or so. First was Vern Rowe, who died a littie over a year ago after years of unselfish service in various sporting activitiesâ. Recently we lost Lloyd Gibson whose contributions to the life of our community is s0 weil known to the young participants in the various sports activities which he sponsored. These men bave'left a legacy which anyone desirous of.the fulfilment and satisfaction of -public service would do weIl to emulate. Maytheir memor be sared and ever green.- Fortunately, there are many other members of Our community whose efforts in community. service is essential, even if it is largely unsung. We shail try to make some amends at Heydenshore Auditorium on June 30 at 7:30 p.m. On tbis occasion we shahl hold our annual achievement night, in which we salute those of our community who have been recommended by the organization to wbich they belong to be recognized for their efforts., This event arose out of a recommendation I made some years ago after attending the annual bowling banquet. On that occasion I looked at the hunidreds of young people who were present and for the first time un- derstood how much we rely on the scores of volun- teers who put in countless hours year in and year out, to keep the various sports and recreation activi- ties going. 1 was overwhelmed by the commitment of s0 many volunteer men and women, who stay on long after their own childrenhave grown beyond the years when they would benefit, to make sure that other people's children can experience the same en- joyment. The achievement night does not really cater to ail of these people, but at least some who otherwise would receive no recognition at ail are given this modest salute. Let'us -ail enjoy this kind of activity while we are small enough as a comn- munity to do so. Corne out on June 30 and in addition to saluting those who receive some well-merited awards, give a thought for those whose behind the scenes activities make Whitby the place that it is.
