Since 1956, the Whitby Chamber of Commerce has been presenting the Peter Perry Award to an, outstanding citizen, as chosen by a panel of judges. The award will be pre- sented at a dinner at Heydenshore Pavilion July 21 Any citizen of Whitby may nominate one' or more' candidates by maiing the ir nomina- tion to the secretary of the Chamber of Com- merce, Whitby Centen- niai Building, 416 Centre Street South. - Along witb the name of the person nominat- ed, one should outline the reasons why that person should be nominated for the award. Candidates for nomi- nation must be residents of the Town of Whitby, and no candidate shal be disqualified by rea- son of bis office, em- ployment, business or association with the Chamber of Commerce. The award may be made posthumously. The closing date for nominations is June 25. Mere numbers Of nominations wil not, in- fluence the decision of the judges. This year the Cham- ber will follow the pollcy of releasing the names of more than one finallst prior to the presentation of the award. The name of the winner wlll be an- nounced at the dinner July 22. The Peter Perry Award is named after Peter Perry,, the- found- er of Whitby, who, made considerable contribu- tions to the development of the communiity in the 1840's. The award originated with a speech by On- tario County Judge John E. Pritchard at Whit- by's Centennial celebra- tions in 1955. When the judge referred to Peter ROOFING Perry and said there were still many Peter Perrys in Whitby, the Chamber of Commerce decided to make an award to be presented annually to an outstand- ing citizen,. Judge -Pritchard donated the plaque, which is kept by each winner for one year. A keeper plaque is given to the winner after he returns the Peter Perry plaque at the end of the year.
