After braving three days of rain, black flues and bloodsuckers, the fearless Anderson Outers' Club members have returned to the mundane school rou- tine. Durlng these three action-packed days, the twenty skllled students and five staff advisors canoed 'the raging rapids, portaged the craggy terrain and even swam the tepid waters of Muskoka's Algonquin Park. The group trained by takrng courses in first aid, canoeing, swim- ming survival, and hypothermia preven- tion, in preparation for the 34 mile workout. The group would like to ,thank everyone who made it possible for them to go on the excur- sion. During the same week, on Friday, May 21, Andersonians skated the might away. at Wheelies Rolier Centre, located on Burns Street, in Whitby. The arena offered a discount to each Anderson student who presented bis acti- vity card at the ad- mission booth. Once in- side, students skated to the dise jockey' - Jim's widespread collection of sounds which included "4Journey",Py "Lover- boy",,.and many. others. A skating evening simi- lar to the one offered to Anderson was offered to various achools through- out the Durham Region. During the course of the evening the results of a school-wide poil were announced naming Mr. Lotton as the favourite teacher and "Stairway to Heaven" as the favourite song. However, the seniors at Anderson had been thinking of another event. As they reach the end of their career at Anderson, they had a Semi-Formal as a final celebration. This social affair began last Friday might at 7 p.m. with a reception. A dinner of tender, prime nib of beef was served at 7:30 p.m. Herman Valckx, a for- mer Anderson student, acted as disc Jockey for the dance. The Prom Queen and King who were elected by the stu- dents were given the honor of starting the dance. There were also door prizes given out, buffet was served. The students w'Ould like to thank the art students for maklng the beautiful .murals. Speclal thanks are also extended to Mr. Freeman and Kari Joa- quin for their expertise in the organization of -a most memorable event. 'Brian Devenyl, who competed in the midget boys' division, placed first in the 400m hurdies with a time of one minute, 1.7 seconds. This was a new COSSA record!1 He set another COSSA record in the 100m hurdies placing first with a time of 13.9 seconds. The midget boys' relay team placed fourth in its event with a time of 49.2 -seconds. Brian and the relay team have -qualified for the Eastern Ontario Regional Meet to be held at the Terry Fox Stadium, Ottawa. The good news of the COSSA meet was announced during our Awards Night. Brian Devenyi accepted the award for the Maie Athiete of the Year, attired in his track suit. The award for Female Athiete of the Year was presented to Caria Michelin who, last year, shared the award with Rita Ainorin. School Letters; were awarded to Joanne Gallagher, Melin- da Fong, Anne Brackenbury and Gina Blair. The musician of the year was Teresa McCaul. The student/teacher basebaîl game was a success despite the continuous threat of rain Fortunately, the weather cooperatéd long enough for a- student victory. The final score was 16 to 14. Review is taking place this week - for the seniors. Juniors will begin their review soon after.
