PAGE 10, WEDNESDAY, MAY 26, 1982, WI¶TBY FREE PRESS Chase ended at gunpoint A provhcial court judge has ordered a pre- sentence report to be prepared on a Whitby man who allegedly led police on a 19-minute high speed chase which resulted in him being arrested at gun point. Last Wednesday, Judge Sam Murphy made the order after being told that on March 27 Durham Regional Police Force Constable Jeff Gibson was forced to draw his revolver to order Marinus Obdam, 41, of 9 Michael Blvd. out of his vehicle after forcing it to stop on Regional Road-23. According to acting Crown attorney David Franklin another officer attempted to check Ob- dam's vehicle at the Whitby harbor. How- ever, before he would order the accused out of his vehicle Obdam start- ed it and sped away. The court was told that Obdam drove east along Water Street at speeds of up to 150 kilo- metres per hour whilst driving entirely to the left of the centre divid- ing line. The accused then got on Highway 401 east- bound to Ajax while the police giving chase. Leaving the freeway, Obdam drove north to Taunton Road before heading south on -Regional Road 23, Franklin said. The prosecutor said that five cruisers took part in the pursuit and finally forced Obdam to. stop when they boxed his vehicle in just torth of Dundas Street. Franklin told the court that the accused only left his vehicle at gunpoint andhad to be handcuffed. He also claimed that Obdam had shouted to\ Gibson "go ahead, shoot me, shoot me." The crown attorney also informed Judge Murphy that the police force had warned Ob- dam earlier that even- ing not to drive after responding to a domes- tic dispute at his home. "His driving was atro- cious," Franklin said, "it was a serious, lengthy and dangerous car chase." In addition to a jail sentence, the Crown is seeking a two-year driv- ing suspension. . In his client's defense, lawyer John Gillespie told the court Obdam "tried to keep an eye out" for oncoming motorists when he drove through several red lights and stop signs. Obdam has pleaded guilty to: driving with more than 80 niilli- grams of alcohol in his blood as well as danger- ous driving. He was also charged with: having liquor in his vehicle; failing to stop; impaired driving as well as criminal negligence in the operation of a motor vehicle. He will be sentenced in'Ajax Provincial Court on June 17. The summer is again upon us and for high school and university or community college students it is time to start looking for that summer job. More than 2,200 local employers were visited to solicit jobs and promote student hiring.
