't Vol. 12, No. Il Wednesday, March 17, 1982 32 w w ýv, îc P7 I Failing to declare $135,720.20 in income will cost a Whitby dentist $202,657.79. Last Friday, Dr. John B. Davies was con- victed of income tax evasion by Oshawa Provincial Court Judge Donald Dodds. According to a statement of facts given to the court by Crown Attorney E. Ormston, the special investigations division of the Depart- ment of National Revenue found that Davies had understated his income by a total of $135,720.20 between 1976 and 1980. Consequently, he was charged with "wil- fully evading payment of federal taxes in the amount of $52,682.13" for those years. Davies, 50, of 806 Henry Street, carries out his dental practise at 312 Dundas Street West, Whitby as asole proprietor. For the years 1976 to 1980, Davies filed in- corne tax returns showing a gross professional income from his dental practise of $495,263. In the statement of facts the Crown said, "The income tax returns were prepared by his accountant based on information received by Dr. Davies. "In each year, Dr. Davies would arbitrarily reduce the yearly income figure given to the accountant for the preparation of his tax return. He also reduced the amount of the total receipts, thereby preventing his own ac- countants from detecting that the income amount given was not correct. "The income suppressed amounted to 21 per cent of Mr. Davies income," the statement concluded. Davies pleaded guilty to the charge. Judge Dodds subsequently found Davies guilty and fined him $52,682.13, giving him 12 months to pay. In addition to the fine imposed by the court, Davies must pay .civil penalties, interest, provincial government and federal govern- 'ment taxes amounting to $149,975.66. Thickson Rd. plans ok'ed by committee Whitby Town Council's administrative committee has given its endorsement of the Thickson Road/Dundas Street sub-central area study plan. This plan makes provision for the develop- ment of some 558,000 square feet of commer- cial space in the area surrounding the inter- section. According to planning director Bob Short, the plan simply puts the land use designations found in the Durham Regional Official Plan into effect. Short also maintains that the amount of commercial space provided for meets the region's requirements. The director also claimed that the proposed development of Jovial Investments Limited also conforms to the official plan.* Jovial was denied permission by Whitby Town Council to build a Canadian Tire outlet on the northern part of its land on Dundas Street East imme- diately behind Bowman Ave. For details, see story on page 11.
