This programme starts ln Kindergarten where the half-day programme Is conducted ln French. The chlldren speak to the teacher In Engiish, and the teacher responds in French. Graduaily the chiidren make the transi- tion from Engiish to Fren c h. The elementary sohool programme is con- ducted entireiy ln French from Kindergarten to Grade 3. At last week's corn- mittee meeting, Oshawa Mayor Alan Pilkey said be would not favor the increase forAjax and Whitby unless bis muni- cipality'also got-an ex- tra voice. Oshawa currently bas an. il member regional delegation, including Pllkey. Pilkey said that Oshawa only bas 37 per cent of the seats on regional council while it bas 42 per cent of tbe popu4lation. In fact, Pilkey won an amendment to a.motion made by WbiitbyMayor Bob Attersley to iniclude a reqùest for an addi- tional Oshawa member as well as additional members for Whitby and Ajax. Supporting the extra seats were Pilk-ey, Brock Township Mayor Allan -McPhail and Oshawa Councillor Margaret Sbaw. However, comîmittee chairman Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard, Attersley and Regional Chairman Gary Herrema opposed the, motion.' Trustees gave tbe ap- provals for the salary hikes at tbe board's' meeting last week. Director -of Education Ken Munroe will now earn $68,858 a year and Superintendent of Busi- ness Ross Backus will bave a salary of $59,914 annually. According. to Trustee Pat Mattson (Picker- ing), chairma'n 0f tbe board's finance commi- ttee, said Ithat these are the samne percentage in- creases given to other supervisory personnel.
