By RIMAS MIECIUS Good kids did some great curling at the Whitby. Curling Club last weekend and Erie Fletcher of Toronto was the best as his Victoria Park Secondary School rink took the Ontario Schoolboy Curling title. Fletcher, a dark- haired 18-year-old, downed defending champion Peter Mickus of Renfrew 8 to 7 in the final game ta preserve an'unblemished record with five wins against no lasses in the eight- rink double-knockout event sponsored by Gore Mutual Insurance Company of Cambridge, Ontario. The Victoria Park performance was a con- trast from what they did a year ago in the last provincial playdowns in Pembroke where the foursome sat at the side- Uines watching other rinks challenge . for the title after two straight losses. " The big difference over last season'-was that we gainèd a lot of experience," Fletcher said. "I've gotten used ta the pressure and im- proved my strategy. " Fletcher quipped, "The extra strategy cames easy to learn when you watch other teams f rom behind the glass like in Pem- broke." Fletcher credits much of bis success -to developing aggressive curling tactics similar ta those of 1981 Ontario men's champion Ed -Werenich, familiar ta Whitby curling fans througb his numerous appearances in the Sun Life bonspiel. "I like the game Ed- die plays because hie neyer lets up and is always tbrowing behind guards," Fletcher, who is caached by Guy Elliott, admitted. "lThat puts a lot of pressure on the other teams. "' The 'Victoria Park skip was forced into that type of offensive shoot- ing game early in the final against Renfrew. Mickus, a blond- haired part-time com- mercial pilot, drew ta an open bouse in the second end ta score four points and gained a 4 to 2 lead. But the pesky, deter- mmcnd rink didn't fold. Renfrew had an adyan- tage it couldn't capi- talize on when Miekus blew a hit-and-stà y shot, rolli ng his shooter in- consequentially out of scoring range, when he had a perfect chance to take two and gain con- trol of the game. Instead Renfrew tied the score at 7 ta 7 with onie point giving Toronto the hammer coming home. But Fletcher also began ta, feel the jitters and had to make a tough shot with bis final stone in tbe lOth.' Facing a Renfrew counter in the back eigbt-foot circle, Flet- cher made a delicate tap-up shot, his only op- tion, to push his green rock into the four-foot area for the win. "I was just warried about getting the shot past the guard since I knew I had the weight to make it," explained Fletcher. Backing up Fletcher were: vice-skip Shaun Everest, second Brian Lutber and lead 'Steve Johns. Fletcher reached the final with a semi-final 10 ta 3 victory aver Owen Sound's John Bittarf, while Renfrew edged Stuart Anderson of Chesterville 5 ta 3. Chesterville bounced back ta win the Gare Shield in the consolation final, downing Owen Sound 6 ta 4 in an extra end.
