ILast week, 'council gave its blessings to the plans whichwill see lands developed to the south-west of the Whitby Mail. CBC will construet 15 ~single family homes with 50 foot lots as wel as 174 single homres with 42-foot lots. and 131 Sapartments. yThe appr*oVal Was given seven years after Sthe original plan was The 60-year-old Brock Street South C1NR over- paswiil be resurfaced tis summer. k. According to Durham Region's public works- departmîent, the bridge's owner, Canadian National Rail- ways, will lay a "hot- mix" asphaît surface on, the structure's timber fdeck some time in the surnmer. At the last meeting of Durham Regional Coun-- cil, Councillor* Tom Ed- wards requested that the region ensure that potholes on the bridge II are seea serious accident happening' there,"l he said.' RoftAndrews, roads maintenance technician F Tird mai submnitted. Last spring, OBO pro- posed to build single family homes on 35-foot lots - a plan which was vigorously opposed from many quarters. The opposition was led by Regional Coun- cillor Tom Edwards who maintained that the town's bylaws z which state that single family homes be on 50-foot lots - should be enforced. if they weren't, Ed- wards feared that other developers would. be demnanding the same lot frontages. After CBC withdrew the 35-foot, lots a com- for the department, .said that the potholes have been recently filled with a "cold-mix" asphaît by regional crews.' "But. that at best is only, a 'stop-gap' measure to hold us over the win ter," he added. Andrews said, that "cold-mix" can only'be used duringthe winter months. One of the major problemns in that moisture Iseeps into the bridge's wooden deck and when it freezes, the road surface cracks due to the pressure. "Then when it freezes, the road sur- face breaks up," he ex- plained. "'It's stili sub- standard -as far as width goes," Andrews added, ifacing stolen.-goods charge OSHAWA - A third Whitby mîan has been arrested'in cneto ii with the> theft of $10,000 worth of stereo equip- ment from a car parked at an apartment build- ing here. Ã"LASSIFIED AD CALLOSSB111 WHITBY FREE PRESS promise was reached whereby the developer agreed to build more homes with 50-foot lots. The town subsequently agreed to allow homes with 42-foot frontages. Members of the town planning staff have pointed out that deep ravines run through the land and they* advised council that CR0 will have to do a lot of cutt- ing and filling to make the land development ready. CBC has also- been told that the homes will have to be insulated against noise from the nearby CPR tracksand the heavily traveled Thickson Road. Local, regional and provincial officiais have said recently that traffic flows on Thickson Road will become heavier i n the near future once the reconstruction of the Highway 401 inter- change in completed. These officiais, have also hinted that High- way 12, may be moved from its present location on Brock Street to Thickson Road'in the future to ease downtown traffic. problems. This will also allow the high- way to bypass down- town Brooklin. "it's a Model T bridge still b einig used in the space age."P CN's chief engineer for bridges and struc- tures said that the, bridge was paved flot only to preserve the un- derlying timber deck, but to provide vebicles with a smoother ride. John Jeronimus ad- ded that while interim repair work is done by the region, the railway assumes the cost. "Obviously, on rela- tively smn'all jobs' like that in winter, it's cheaper for us to pay the region rather than send crews out fromn Toronto to Whitby, " he said. However, the. perma- nent repair job to be done this summer will be done by ON em- ployees. Dining Guide THE GREAT WALL, 116 Dundas Street West, Whitby 668-7021.
