Cost of the car is $5,996 - $998 more than the standard model. John Wright, national marketing director of Lada Cars of Canada Inc., says the car offers fuel savings of between 20 and 50 per cent, depending on the cost of the propane. A Lada sedan pro- duced 20 per cent fuel savings in an eight- month test in Ontario - which is an average of about eight cents a litre or 36 cents a gallon. Lada officials say that the car that was tested over 17,000 miles under city and country driving conditions has yet to require new spark plugs.' Propane is a fuel that is virtually clean bur- ning and is a no-knock fuel that gives the engine a longer life with reduced maintenance requirements. Propane is also considered safe and non-polluting. Ken Simard, presi- dent of Simard Motors Ltd., is excited about the new car. He says that Simard, in addition to offering the propane option, is also offering automatic transmission on Canada's lowest- priced 1982 model, the Lada 150054 door Sedan. Mr. Wright said that while such a car is a novel idea for Cana- dians, it has been quite a common fuel system in other countries for several decades. He said that 20 per cent of all the cars in Holland are gasoline-propane models. He added that in Holland propane is plentiful. The dual Lada comes with a conventional gasoline tank and a trunk-mounted propane tank. Up until present, propane has been an attractive alternative to gasoline for operators of cars and truck fleets. Until now there have been only 188 propane outlets in Ontario and 40 in Quebec. Both the federal and provincial governments offer tax exemptions to owners of commercial propane vehicles. When the new models make their appearance in early March you will be welcome to drop into Simard Motors Ltd. at 1428 King Street East ini Oshawa and ask about these cars. Help your FUNY3'
