January -Between You and Me By RUTH COLES About writng, Some thoughts about writing and, for those who are interested, information about upcoming'classes to be, held in. Whitby by Terry B oyle, a free-lance writer and poet. I understand from frientds Who are writers that it can be a lonely way of life with much dedication and -discipline.' It must be a le&ned art to shut the wyorld out at times often for hours on end. I do not know because I am not a professional but I can imagine trying to write abook. Everything for me would have to go as I could become s0 absorbed that'I would say, "Stop the world and let me get off."9 My husband bas written many books, but only technical ones so we talk sometimes 0f joining for- ces and wri ting. To record the past could be a goal for everyone. Time slips by so fast and we forget our. own family history wbîch means in time it is gone forever. During my school days long ago, poetry and prose were very much emphasized. From grade one it was an ongoing thing and some rather good writers emerged in later years. No. PZZ733. 75 FIREBIRD k* For me the love of writing'letters may have been a resuit. This was part of the curriculum, a grp;at deal of letter writing which bas stood most of us in good stead. An excellent, way "of communlcatlng but'I arn afraid it may soon become a lost art. During thé war writing letters becamne a good part of every- one'sIffe. Often daily letters to, loved ones w.ho were in constant danger and very muceh in n 1eed of love, and support., How we longed'for return mail and ,how I appreciated the kiidxiess of our mailman who would' ring the cloorbeli twice'when lie had overseas mail from my husband. Romance and how it can develop by letter writing!1To have a loved one far aWay means an' exchange of letters which often means getting to know someone very well. When family members move a long distance away letters may become diaries in themnselves and should neyer be thrown away. I have a card written by a daughter with beautiful words and it hange in a frame tobe read and reread many times over. The housecleaming instinct takes over on occasion and Most of us- are prone to feel we must get rid of sur- plus bits of paper. ,Letter writing brings thoughts of the Post Office. I think'the new rates are a diigrace and flot an an- swer to the problem. Oh yes; I can find 30 or 35 cents for postage but wWI this flot be a hardship for'many, especially older peéople? 1 know many ,elderly- people Who are not able to travel as they once did and letters have filled the gap. As a matter of prin- ciple many of us have cut our letter writing down and'this wMl continue. This may, mean lossof revenue and I .think a very short type of thinking with a great loss for ail concernerd. There are ways of raising the anti without going this route.
