But they still remem- ber the horrors of two world was wars and the 100,000 of their com- rades who laid down their lives for "God, King and Country. " Last Wednesday, 36 years after V-E DaQy and 63 years after the end of the First World War, the members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Bran- ch 112 of Whitby paraded at the Ceno- taph to honor "Thé Fallen". Many indivîduals and groupe laid wreaths at a ceremony that had the largest attendance in recent memnory. Two of Whitby's three surviving Silver Cross Mothers - Hazel Bratley and Mildred Thomas - laid wreaths in meniories of their sons. Mayor Bob Attersley I-t#s flot work to wcilk. Wreaths were also laid by many ser- vice clubs, sehools, the Ontario government and ROSCC Whitby. While* many of the Legion members have gray hair they stili remember with great .pride the sacrifice of their comrades. In honor of them, many wore their medals, ear- ned in campaigns across Europe, Asia and North Africa. Perhaps, their feel- ings were best ex- pressed by one veteran who said, "I wouldn't trade my three years in the service for any other six years of my life but I wouldn't do it 'again for $1 million." These men know from personal experience the horror of war and most of the people in attend- ance had not even been born when they took up ams. Why did these men turn out to honor the dead and relive, even for a -short time, a con- flict they would probably want to for- get? Laurence Binyon, an English poet, once wrote in a poem called The Fallen: "They shaîl not grow old, as we that are left grow old; Age shaîl not weary them, nor the years condemn; At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We shal remember them.
