The questionnaire will be mailed, on a random .basis, to about 1,000 senior citizens and ren- tal-family households. According to the planning department, the study will be con- ducted "to determine the need for non-profit housing and rental assistance in the town." The study will be supervised by the On- tario Ministry of Muni- cipal Affairs and Housing who are also expected to provide a grant to help defray the costs. Another purpose of the study is to assist the town in reviewing its existing housing poli- cies according to the department. "The municipal housing . statement will also include new poli- cies designed to effect- ively deal with recent and expected future change in the supply and demand for housing in the town," planning director Bob Short says. "The survey is expec- ted to help determine the need and demand for non-profit housing whether sponsored by governients or private groups," he continues. "The survey will attem- pt to gauge the need for rental assistance for both senior citizens and families in the town." The questionnaires will be mailed out some- time in the near future receiving the questionn- and those receiving it aire is not interested in are asked to fill it out non-profit housing or and return it to the rentai assistance the department in the town requests that they stamped, addressed en- participate "so that an velope that will be pro- accurate estimateof the vided. total need and demand Even if the person cai be made." airisno inersedi ANNOUNCEMENTS RECEPTION CARDS INVITATIONS THANK YOU CARDS RITN ND OFCz UPI 21 H rod v.. jx nai P P Perms On Special from soft & curly - all perms $3500 including cut & style This Week Only Mon., Wed. and Thurs. no appointment necessary open Mon. - Sat. BLAIR PARK PLAZA WHITBY, ONTARIO 668-5441 The head of the Brook- lin Businessmen's Asso- ciation said last week that hamlet residents are ready to support development plans all the way to the Ontario Municipal Board. "I've never seen a community stand behind a developer like this," Mike Kalynko, the group's chairman said. Kalynko believes that the overwhelming majority of Brooklin residents support plans proposed by First City Development Company Limited to turn the village of 1,600 into a town of 10,500 over a ten year period. Both Whitby Town Council and Durham Regional Council have given their approval to the project. Last week, Oshawa Regional Councillor Ed Kolodzie and Oshawa Public Utilities Commi- ssioner Gord Burnett annoucned that they will contest the development before the OMB. The OMB is em- powered to reject the proposal providing that the Minister of Munici- pal Affairs and Housing Claude Bennett refers it there. However, Bennett can refuse to send the mat- ter to the OMB and given the necessary ap- provals under both the Municipal Act and the Planning Act: Kalynko said that Brooklin residents were upset at Kolodzie's an- nouncement. "If Kolodzie had of walked into- town....he would have met a few people.....they are up in arms about this. The businessman said that the only thing the appeal could do is delay the construction of the project by another year. Kolodzie said last week that the OMB may reject the development on the grounds that the regional solicitor has questioned Durham's legal authority to enter the agreements associa- ted with the scheme. Both Whitby Mayor Bob Attersley and Durham Regional Chairman Gary Herrema have said that both are prepared to defend the project. In fact, Herrema said he will encourage Brooklin residents to appear at the hearing and testify to their sup- port.
