Whitby Mayor Bob At- tersley, a member of the management commit- tee, told his colleagues disgrace" that the chairman wasn't at least paid the provincial average. "I think it's a slam in the chairman's face," Attersley said adding that it was time "to get the region back in shape an the place to start is at the top." "IWhy not give him at said. Attersley also ac- cused fellow councillors of trying to "play to the press" by opposing any increase in salaries for councillors. The five per cent recommendation was arrived at after reject- ing a report from Herrema calling for a 10 salaries. In his report Herrema said "I would think a 10 per cent increase is not unreasonable during this time of inflation. Herrema told the committee that he acknowledged that some members of coufl- cil were well off or had a second income but that there are a few would need a good salary to support their families. However, Regional Councillor Ed Kolodzie (Oshawa) suggested that instead of giving local politiciaris a raise t.hey should be en- couraged to change their lifestyle. "It would be good for us to make adjustmeflts to our lifestyles," he said. Kolodzie said that the salary would not make any politician rethink his position about run- ning for re-election. "If we decreased our salaries by 10 per cent... (you) would stili be first ini the fine of candi- dates," he said adding Lquality goes up when salary goes down. " Kolodzie also accused committee members of being greedy. "You want to suck more money out of the tax- payers, it's greed. " Attersley's position dif- fered from Kolodzie's. He said that a good salary would attract good candidates for municipal office. Oshawa Regional Councillor Margaret Shaw said this idea was "a fallacy. " Durham regional councillors currently earn $13,890 a year and are the highest paid second-tier elected offi- cials in the province. The chairman's current salary is $38,015. However, regional councillors (including the mayors) also receive a salàry for being members of. local council. The average total salary paid to a Durham regional councillor is $21 ,000 a year. The recommendationi also makes provision to increase the stipend paid to regional com- niittee chairmen by $250 to bring their additional renumeration to $1,000 a year. 8:30 am to 6:00 pm
