WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, OCTORER 14, 198 1, PAGE 19 Wh ee itby Free Press YOUR DINING PLEASURE ith Barry Murka r...., EeonoMy huirting restaurant busin ess It would appear from reports that we got over the weekend that restaurants who want to keep the doors open are going to have to offer the dîning public some pretty good eating fare at pretty good prices. We checked on several good eating spots we know to see how they did over the Thanksgiving weekend. This is one holiday, excluding Mother's Day of course, when restaurants usually do very well. Prom what we were able to gather, restau- rants had a good week- end, but not nearly as good as in other years. We dined at a restau- rant in Haliburton on Sunday evening, and believe it or not, had a full course turkey din- ner for only $4.50. The manager said she was quite disappointed in the turnout. She said they had a lot of phone calîs about the dinner, but very few of them turned up. In other years, she said they could hardly handie the crowds. The rneal was deli- cious - turkey of both white and dark meat, cranberry sauce, peas, mashed potatoes smothered ini lovely gravy, hot rolls and for dessert a choice1 of homernade pies. Diners couldn't do better any- where for that price. We learned from the restaurants we checked that the economy 15 the reason for fewer dining out. Some managers are reluctant to talk about it at al, One-or two said that to survive this economie crisis they will have to put on specials every week and at very special prices.
