Once you get over the shock of the man who killed people in Taxi Driver and beat up people in Raging Bull playing a priest the possibiities of'DeNiro in this role is amazing. Then you add Robert Dewall as a vice ridden cop and you get a movie; True Con- fe- ions, that leaves you asking questions. It makes you think. The plot uine isn't al that strong. t hinges on grizzly murder. Dewall is the investigating cop who, angered by this unnecessary death, takes his case per- sonally. The dlues point in two directions one of which brings hlm close to the people in his brother's 1f e. Even when the dlues point in the other direc- tion he stili heads for these people not caring that they could bring DeNiro down from bis place of prominence. DeNiro, as the priest, has become power hungry and his priestly values are in places where they should neyer enter. What is important in this movie are the deci- sions involved in both cases. The two brothers, although headed in totally dif- ferent directions, make decisions which affect each other. Dewail sees the corruptness going on around DeNiro and using wbat is available to hlm brings his brother back into his priestly role. A moral question is also posed. Why do people try and expect to correct their sins with money? Their acts of penance only serve to corrupt others instead of clearing themselves. The acting in this movie is good. If actors of any less stature than DeNiro and Dewall had acted in this rnovie it would have missed and sorely. As happens in too few cases the actors have made a mediocre script look good! Town has land availab le.... Port Whitby needs a co-op: Dr um One Whitby town councillor wants 10 acres of land set aside in Port Whitby for the development of co- operative housing. East Ward Councillor Joe Drumm said last week that the town presently owns about 100 acres of land in the area and the encourage- ment of co-op housing would be an excellent use for some of this land. Classifiïed Ads SeIl Cali 668-6111 Drumm said that the best way to accomplish this is for the town to lease its land to groups wanting to build town- bouses in the Port. "The town should take the bull by the horn, " he said adding that with the current high mort- gage rates, flot every- one will be able to pur- chase the types ofresi- dential development planned for the area. Recently, Whitby Town Council unveiled plans for the develop- ment of a hotel/condo- minium complex at the base of Brock Street South - a project that represents an estimated $40 million investment. Drumm said that these proposaIs should, be supported whole- beartedly, but not to tbe exclusion of other development scbemes. I'm talking about bousing the average guy,"' the councillor said adding co-op bousing is "a great way of getting things going. " Drumm also believes that co-op housing in the Port would be attrac- tive. "A lot of people would be delighted to live in Port Whitby, " besaid. He also said that the two co-operative housing projects operating, in Whitby have been successful and that one on Ribbles- dale Drive has provided homes for 90 familles on only three acres of land. He also points out that this co-op contributes more than $59,000 in property taxes. Co-op housing in Port Whitby would not only bring people into the area but boost assess- ment as well, Drumm said. "1I'm not saying that this is the answer to al the problems," he said- adding it's a step in the right direction. "The town can do a lot with ten acres." Drumm intends to bring his proposaI before council and boped to do so at-last night's meeting. How- ever, resuits of this were not known at pres time. "Let's build the sewer and get the people in there," Druxnm said. Whether or not other members of council will support Drumm 's proposaI is flot known. ONIOR mýbici
