WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDA'Y,'OCTOBER 7, 198 1, PAGE 13 Family week, Oct. 11-m17 The Whitby Jaycees willI observe "Family Week" froxu October il to 17. According to a spokes- man for the club, the purpose of the week is the "observance of the importance of the family in Canadian Society." "Family week is an opportunity for more than 1,500 young people between the ages of 18 and 40 ln some 30 Jaycee units in the Central Region and everyone in their communitiesto honor the family as a community institution," the club says. On October Il bet- ween 6:30 and 9 p.m., the Jaycees will be holding a family night at Wheelies Roller Rink. During family swim times at Iroquois Park Pool, families will be adznitted for haif-price under a special arrange- ment with the Whitby Parks and Recreation Department. The Jaycees also have several other suggestions for "Family week."f The group wants to encourage famiies to take up a famuly service project (such as helping an elderly neighbour with sort-.-- difficult chores); holding a family awards night where family achieve- rnents may be recognized or even having an evening where family members switch roles (having children become "4parents", for exam- ple). As a final word, the Jaycees are also en- couraging that the family attend the chur- ch of their choice that week considering the Whitby Ministerial Association has declared October 18 as "Family Sunday. New booký out iabout Whithy By COUNCILLOR ROSS BATTEN North Ward Although my responsibility as chairman of the clerk's department has flot presented a big challenge it has given me the opportunity to gain. some knowledge and experience in this day-to-day operation of the Town of Whitby. Some of the knowledge was gained by having some involvement in the production of the Town of Whitby's informationbookiet "IGeneral "General Statisties Information and Governmental Struc- ture". Although this bookiet has been available previously, its existance has not been common knowledge to the taxpayer. The booklet contains such information as council functions and responsi- bilities, makeup and responsibilties of town depart- ments, responsibilities and makeup of boards and committees, general statisties, 1981 mil rates and municipal budget, information concerning sources of revenue and an outllne of how the tax dollar is spent. This information should be of interest to everyone and as of October 12 will be sent to local libraries, local organizations, professional offices and will be available upon request at the municipal offices. As of October 5, I arn chairnian of the treasury department and therefore responsible for the preparation and presentation of the 1982 budget. I arn looking forward to this challenge and the knowledge I wll gain by being involved in the development stages of the budget. As chairman of the tr-easury, I will continue to be a member of the administrative committee whose prime respon- sibility is in the area of planning. We were ex- treniely active on this committee this past year and the coming year promises to be just as active and exciting. These responsibilities are, of course, in addition to the everyday activity of representing the concer- ns of the residents of the North Ward. I consider this my prime résponsibility and I take it seriously. 1 am n ot always successful in solving the problems that are presented to me but I do not consider any- thlng too small to look after and I welcome the op- portunity to discuss these concerns with you.
