The pigeon fanciers, mostly members of organized racing pigeon clubs, were responding to complaints that bave prompted town officiais to propose a bylaw ban- ning the keeping of pigeons in tbe built-up area of the town. In bis report to coun- cil, town clerk Don McKay said that there bave been a number of complaints received regarding tbe keeping 0f pigeons within the town's urban area. "A particular nuisan- ce and annoyance to residents living within the immediate ares 0f pigeon coops are the droppings of these bir- ds," McKay said. "As tbe birds are not con- fined to the properties 0f their owners, tbey nýturally deposit their droppings in the neigb- bourbood area. The committee was told that racing pigeons are different from the common or barni pigeon and that when exercised or raced tbey fly dlrec- tly back into the coop - because that le the way tbey are trained. Gordon Srigley, also of Barberry Court, told the committee that the neighbourhood suffers because of the pigeons and their droppings. "Wby shouild we have to suffer witb pigeon droppings? " Srigley said adding t.bat he bas suffered with droppings inl- i pool, on bis out- door furniture and bis laundry. Tbe pigeon fanciers informed the committee tbat a bylaw passed by tbe City of Oshawa in 1969 bas appeared to have solved a similar problem. Tbat bylaw makes the associations responsible for tbe con- duet of its members and tbeir birds. At the suggestion of Regional Councillor Tom Edwards, the mat- ter bas been tabled for one montb 50 that both Pigeon. fanciers and tbose witb concerns on tbe matter can aid staff in drawing Up a bylaw that will meet the con- cerns of ail involved. Fire prevention The Whitby Fire Department will be honoring Fire Preven- tion Week from October 5 to 9. According to Capt. Ken Corner, the f ire prevention officer, tbe main fire station on Brock Street South will be the scene of numer- ous displays and demon- strations on how to pre- vent fires. Corner said that while an open bouse will also be beld more details will be released next week.
