WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1981, PAGE 19 Whitby Free Press YOUR DINING PLEASURE with Barry Murkar.... Diner really tempted at Whitby's Le Chalet By MARJORIE BURGESS , Free Press Staff People have the terrible trait of taking those things, people or amenities that are always there when one needs them, for gran- ted. Such is the case with the restaurant reviewed for this week, Le Chalet. Situated at 110 Dundas Street West, practically at Whitby's four corners and very close to our of- fice, we have enjoyed many good meals and conversation there and yet, because we are so used to it "being there", we haven't done an up- date review on it since last November ! In order to correct this oversight, there- fore, we went for dinner armed with pen and paper, and our ap- petites. This charming restaurant is well known in town for its friendly ambience, with its stoned and stuccoed walls, red tablecloths and carpet, and its relaxing fireplace. More than this, how- ever, Le Chalet is known for its excellent service. The waitresses are courteous and friendly, and always there when you need them. (So im- pressed have we been with this quality over the years that the Whit- by Free Press presented Nick Angelopoulos, owner of Le Chalet, with a plaque commending him and his employees at our 10th anniversary party.) Despite the fact that when we arrived there was a large wedding reception being held in the banquet room, and there were many out-of- town people dropping in after the rodeo, we were quickly given our menu and brought our drink order. The menu is a story in itself! Most people think of Le Chalet as a steak house (indeed, 13 years ago it was the first steak house in the region) but the menu is so varied and out- standing there is some- thing for anyone's palet- te., As well as many dif- ferent cuts of steak, one can order such special- ities as Chateaubriand, Stuffed Cornish Hen and Duckling a l'Orange, just to name a few selec- tions. Le Chalet also of- fers excellent roast beef, not only done the way you want it, but Le CHALET DINING ROOM, 100 Dundas Street, Whitby 668-4377 Long a favourite eating spot for people in Durham Region, Le Chalet specializes in Seafood, Steaks and Roast Beef. They feature a businessmen's luncheon from $3.00 and up. Dinner for two is from $15.00 and up. A salad bar is included with full course meals. All major credit cards are accepted. carved as thin or as thick as your taste demands. Nick feels that his house specialty is Fillet Normandie, which is stuffed with Scampi and dipped in wine sauce. For the seafood lover, there are no less than seven fresh seafood en- trees on the menu. It took us a while to decide what to order, as there are more than 30, entrees to choose from, as well as appetizers and salads. While we were deciding, we ap- peased some of our hunger with an order of Le Chalet's garlic cheese bread, which is fantastic! When we finally made our selections, one of us started with the Escargots de Borgogne, cooked to perfection in a garlic and herb butter. The other diner, being on a diet and knowing how large the portions run at this restaurant, chose to have tomato THE GREAT WALL,. 116 Dundas Street West, Whitby, 668-7021. A favourite eating spot for Chinese food lovers. A large selec- tion of Canadian dishes also served. Prices range from $2.50 and up for lunch, and $3.45 and up for dinner. 'Taurus 'n Pisces' (otherwise known as surf and turf), one of the entree selections, came with mushrooms, a very fresh salad, and an unusual vegetable dish comprised of zucchini, onions and other vege- tables in a sauce. The steak was done to order and very tasty and the lobster was pink and succulent. The other selection, Dover Sole Almondine, with a side order of arti- choke hearts, also came with the zucchini and salad. The Sole was ex- cellent and there was so much of it, it filled the whole plate! There was no skimping on the roasted almonds either, as in some restaurants. We both agreed that, tempting as the salad bar was, we wouldn't have had room for dessert if we had suc- cumbed to it. There are six desserts on the menu and we or. dered the hot apple strudel and the baclava. The apple strudel was flaky, tender, and filled with fruit. The Baclava, a Greek dessert con- sisting of puffed pastry filled with honey and nuts, was beyond com- pare (so much for the diet!). We finished our meal with coffee and Nick's iiew special drink, The Earthquake. Watch out for this one, it shouldn't be passed up, but it is aptly named! Speaking of spirits, there is an ample wine list and Le Chalet also offers a good house wine, both red and white, that can be bought by the bottle ($9.95), carafe or glass. Two people could dine here in the evenings, with appetizer, entree, dessert and wine for $25 - $30, which is these in- flationary times is very reasonable. As was mentioned earlier, there are ban- quet facilities available for from 25-150 people and now's the time to book your Christmas parties. In the near future, there will be disco entertainment, mostly on a 50's theme, as the demand for 50's music is growing. The Chalet is open seven days a week, and is well worth visiting. You will find yourself returning again and again for the consistent- ly good food and ser- vice. To make reserva- tions or to make ban- quet arrangements, call 668-4377. The restaurant is open Monday to Thursday from noon to il p.m., Friday noon to 12:30, Saturday 4 p.m. to 12:30 a'.m. and Sunday 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Bon appetit!
