PAGE 16, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEM BER 2,1981, WIIITBY FREE PRESS Whitby Free Press SPORTS WEEK Whitby soccer club wins two out of three By SALVATORRE PALAZZOLO In recent Durham League soccer action, Whitby's Minor Mosquito team has ear- ned a prestigious tie with current leader Ajax, a close decision over Pickering, and an impressive win against Oshawa Soccer Club. In the first contest Whitby was in desperate need for a win in order to get back into con- tention for the league title. Accordingly, they went into the game with admirable determina- tion which for the first ten minutes of the game resulted only in terri- torial domination. This was accomplished despite the lack for this match of several key players which forced the Whitby coach to do some last minute juggling: Paul Moschella, usually in- valuable upfield, was started in net. This move allowed the Ajax forwards a little more freedom than they should have been allowed, so much so that, between the tenth and the fifteenth minutes of the initial half they succeeded in penetrating the Whitby defense twice with Jason Bibeau on high shot from the left and Paul Brigs, following a hard drive from close range which the Whitby goalie bravely attem- pted to stop. Thus despite a clear territorial domination Whitby found itself down by two, unjustly so, it might be added. At this point Dean Alexan- der, in a surprise move, was asked to guard his team goal and this he succeeded in doing ef- fectively to everybody's amazement, including perhaps his own, consi- dering this represented his first exposure in such a position. On several occasions he saved the day for his teammates who in turn took an even more deci- sive control of the play. Paul Moschella proved instrumental in moun- ting Whitby's comeback when with ten minutes into the second half he measured a perfect cross from the right, Jeff Bugelli was prompt in serving Justin Moore who readily let go a driving rising shot bet- ween the left post and the Ajax goalie. The Whitby team, sponsored by Checkers Variety, encouraged by this weil deserved goal pressed on and the equalizer was not long in coming. Again Paul Moschella took the ini- tiative, this time on a corner kick, with the bail landing in front of the net and a couple of Whitby players attempt- ing penetration through a myriad of legs which resulted in some rather weak rebounds; one of which was controlled by Johnny Palazzolo with a perfectly placed shot in- to the left hand side cor- ner of the Ajax net. This celebrated his tirst goal since playing with the Whitby Reps, a praise- worthy feat considering he usually plays in a defensive position. With about fifteen minutes left in the game the Checkers Variety players pressed on in search of the victory, but the Ajax defense proved skillful in keeping the ball out of their net. The following week the Checkers Variety team beat their Pickering counterparts in a game interrupted for about fifteen minutes by a lightning, thunder and rainstorm. Whi.tby scored one before the untimely break and one after with Dean Alexander and Mark O'Dell. Pickering goal came on a penalty kick midway through the second half. Credit for this victory goes mainly to the Whitby defense who, throughout atleast two thirds of the game, succeeded in nullifying Pickering's attacks. Michael MacKay, Mark Blasak, Lee Kosloff, Mirko Favit, Tom Bracken- bury and Johnny Palaz- zolo deserve special mention for a game well played. The Whitby forwards redeemed themselves during the next contest against Oshawa Soccer Club. Not only did they score eight goals, but they succeeded in mounting several at- tacks which, with better luck, could have resulted in at least a half dozen more points. Minutes from the start, half-back Mark Blasak sent the ball in front of centre forward Mike Reier who, in a burst of speed, went past a couple of Oshawa defen- semen to 'resent him- self in front of the op- posing goalie whom he had no difficulty in Pepsi go-kart challenge beating. A few momen- ts later Mark Blasak promptly controlled a had clearing by the Oshawa goalie and lob- bied the ball into the empty net. A rare Oshawa coun- ter-attack took Whitby by surprise making the score 2-1. Whittby responded quickly acquiring its two goal advantage following a corner kick taken by Justin Moore. Dean Alexander waited for the high ball to land on his left wing position before kicking it to the right of the goalie. As surprisingly as before, Osinawa mounted another attack which brought then again one goal away from evening the game. But this was not te be for the Whitby players added five unanswered goals before the final whistle. Mike Reier made it 4-2 after receiv- ing a pass from Justin Moore; Dean Alexander scored the fifth point for Whitby after receiving the ball from Paul Moschella; Justin Moore transformed a penalty kick awarded after an Oshawa player handled the ball with his hands in a desperate at- tempt to prevent it from entering his net; Mike Reier subsequently made the score 7-2, thus registering a well deserved hat trick; Kevin Lee Sui added one more for Whitby on an inspired pass from John Bandel, settling the final score at 8 to 2. The action was fast and furious over the weekend as Whitby's Family Kartways held the annual Pepsi Challenge Go-kart Races. The day-long event attracted over 250 go-kart enthusiasts from all over Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes and the north-eastern United States. Over $8,0o in prizes and trophies were won during the day. According to Bob Clark of Family Kartways, the event was the largest go-kart race ever held in Canada on the country's largest go-kart track. - Free Press Staff Photo
