WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19, 198 1, AGI Whitby adopts buy, Canadian policy The Town of Whitby wil attempt to make it a practùse to buy Canadian. Whltby Town Council bas endorsed the On- tario Government's Canadian Preference Policy that was developed by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism. The program was started in order to en- courage not only muni- cipalities but indlvi- duals and companies as well to purchase Canadian produced goods and services where ever possible. The provincial gover- nment originally made the request in Novem- ber, 1980 and said that Canadian goods sbould be bought even if foreign-made ones can be purchased for 10 per jcent less. Town Treasurer AI Claringbold lndicated in a report to council that he bas no difficulty witb supportlng tbepolicy. He told council that the town's present jpolicy on tbe purcbase DQ bike winner Ron and Jackie Beck, the owners of tbe Whit- by Dairy Queen outlet bave announced tbe latest wlnner in their "Treating You Rigbt Sweeptakes." The winner of the latest draw is Mike Frame of Mason Drive, Whitby. Frame is tbe winner of a Raleigh "DQ Treat Machine" 10 speed, 26 inch bicycle. The final of the three draws will be beld on August 28. of goods and service is to buy "on the basis of quality, service, avail- ability and finally, price." However, he added that 'I bave no objec- tions to ailowing a 10 per cent price preference for Canadian purchased goods and services pro- vided that ail other fac- tors are equal. "lTo the best of my knowledge, tbe majority of gooda and services purcbased at the present time are manu- factured. Some office supplies and some trucks might be excep- tions." However, the adop- tion of tbis policy should not be a great financial burden on tbe tax- payer. "I believe that the dollar effect of this policy wil be minimal," Claringbold said. Tbe only major visible cbange that wiil be needed will be a cbange in the tendering format, bis report concluded. Bylines cont 'inued CONT'D FROM PG. 7 yard was used. Eventually eacb church bad its own churcbyard. In 1872, Mr. S.M. Thomas diteded the south ten acres of bis property to tbe town, wbich was turned into Groveside Cemetary. Strange to relate, the first funeral tbere was that of tbe local undertaker's wife. Some 40Oyears later, the stones frorn al the cburchyards were gently moved to Groveside and set in cernent in a special memorial section. Interestingly one of these markers reads Rev. Philander Smith D.D., Bisbop of the Metbodist Episcopal Church of Canada., born Schobaree N.Y. 4-27-1796, <ied Brooklin 3-28-1870. In closing, I mnust copy a note written by tbe late Mrs. Frank Batty of Brooklin, written less than three years before ber deatb. I find it to be quite profound, and altbough written many many years ago it is nonetbeless as true today as it will be a hundred years fromn now. "The growing good of this world is partly depen- dent on the unhistoric acts, and tbat things are not so ill witb you or me as tbey migbt have been, is baif owing to the number wbo have faitbfully lived tbe hidden life and lie in unvisited tombs. " Makes you stop and think doesn't it? TIP 0F THE WEEK To darn small boles or tears in lace curtains or tablecloths, place a piece of netting, darnpened with starcb, over the boles on the wrong side and then press it down firmly with a hot iron. Voila no more hold. This is greatly appreciated if you are as bad at darning as yours truly. Remember, during the course of your life you will probably do foolisb things; at least do them with en- thusiasm.
