MPP (PC - Durham West) Ontario Minister of Revenue Exci*ted by revenue move July 29 was a special day for residents of Durham Region. Not only was there a celebration of the long-anticipated Royal Wedding, but there was also a significant occasion taking place in Durham. On that day, as the Minister of Revenue, I had the pleasure of participating in I'topping-off " the roof of the seven-storey building in downtown Oshawa which will soon become the new head office of the Ontario Ministry ot Revenue. A few years ago, in 1977, when former Treasurer, Darcy McKeough, announced the move 0f revenue's head office in Oshawa, I was a very interested municipal politician - interested not only in govern- ment decentralization, but also in the fact that revenue was moving so close to my area. As the mayor of Pickering and a resident of Durham Region, I was excited at the prospect 0f what the employment opportunities and the benefi- PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, 198 1, PAGE 13 cial economic impact of local Ministry spending which the relocation would bring to the community. The first stage of building construction is now complete and the first of some 1,500 revenue em- ployees will begin working in their new location in about 12 months. Based on a recent staff survey, at least two-thirds of our present revenue staff intend to remain with the ministry after the move. By next year, many more employees and their families will have moved to Durham Region to ac- tively participate in the social and economic life of this community. Since the initial announcement of the relocation, the Ministry has initiated a comprehensive infor- mation campaign, to ensure that staff are aware of activities in Durham, housing trends and prices, educational and recreational facilities and other special areas of interest. Most revenue job vacancies are presently adver- tised in Durham area newspapers and we now have on file some 2,500 job applications from local resi- dents. A satellite personnel office has been opened in Oshawa and it is expected that, over a period of time, an increasing number 0f revenue positions will be filled by Durham residents. I arn particularly pleased that our building is progressing on sehedule and theJuly 29 roof "top- ping-off" ceremony graphically depicted that our move to Oshawa is now an imminent event., Along with my colleague, the Honourable Douglas Wiseman, Minister of Government Services, a large gathering of municipal and provincial government officials among others, were on hand to witness the symbolic pouring of the final concrete portion of the building's roof. By late next summer, the Ministry of Revenue will be fully installed as Durham's newest corporate citizen, playing its part in the social and economic development of the Region and, specifically, the revitalization of Oshawa's downtown core. -u E i NOTICE.
