They learned the basics of soldiering at the Col. R.S. McLaughlin Armory during two weeks of marching, class lec- tures, and rifle drill, ini- cluding how to -strip down the standard NATO-issue semi- automatic rifle, then put it back together. As Sgt. David Ostryz- niuk, second in com- mand for SYEP said, "Maie or female, they are ail treated alike - they ail take the same training. They will sleep in tents most of the time but sometimes they wii sleep under the stars beneath their pon- chos." Course commander Lt. Ken Stewart said "The ultimate goal is to train these people as armored crewmen." (The ladies, of course, eventually bi-anch off into less hazardous trades such as being cooks or administrative clerks.) Most of these militia volunteers are 17, 18 or 19, but sorne are older.
