By SALVATORRE PAI AZOLO Whitby's Minor mosquito soccer team continues on its winning streak: its only defeat in the Durham Youth Soccer League came almost two months ago when it feIl to the current league leader, Ajax, in the season opener. Since then the Whitby team sponsored by Checker's Variety has obtained a tie and six impressive vic- tories. In the return game against Ajax which previously had won al its gamnes the Whitby players knew that in or- der to stay in contention they would have to beat their oppoiients. Despite having two of their best teammates away on holiday they started the game decisively. This resulted in a territorial dominance for the initial 10 to 15 minutes crowned halfway through the first haîf by the lone goal of the game: following the taking of a couple of corner kicks Paul Moschella succeeded in making a hard shot travel along the face of the Ajax net where a defenseman could not help but score on his own goalie. Encouraged by such happy turn of events the Checker's Variety players controlled the play throughout the rest of the first period of play: the best Ajax could achieve was to score on an off-side position minutes from the hall time whistle but the referee had no hesitation in disallowing the irregular goal. The seccnd half saw a reversai of roles with the Ajax llayers on the attack and the Whitby ones attempting in con- taining them: the latter succeeded thanks to the superlative effort put forth by the defen- semen; Mark Blasak, A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE Just Might Change Your Lif e Explore your potential as a Real Estate Sales Associate, attend a Family Trust Corporation CAREER IN REAL ESTATE SEMINAR TH URSDAY, AUGUST 6 AT 7:30 P.M. With this precious victory the Whitby team put itself very much in contention for the league cham- pionship for it is now only one point behind the current leader, Ajax. Checker's Variety next game did not ap- pear as arduous: playing in Pickering they trounced the locals with a resounding 6-2. It did not take long for the Whitby players to take the lead: within one minute from the star- ting whistle they were already one up when David Uden led an at- tack from the right and following a contrast with a Pickering defen- seman KEvin Lee Sui promptly kicked the bal inside the net. Not more than 30 seconds later the score was tied when as a resuit of an apparently innocuous corner kick a Pickering player was able to deflect the bal inside the near post., Such quick retort by their opponents had the resuit of convincing the Whitby players on the necessity of being on the alert throughout the duration of the game: they thus took complete control of the play especially after Paul Moschella succeeded in taking a model of a free kick fromn the left with the sphere finding its way hîgh at the jointure of the right post with the crossbar. Subsequently the same player proved his talents as a playmaker when from a central position he gave a perfect through bail to Mike Reier who skiilfully took possession while rushing toward the ad- versary's goal; the now unprotected goa lie could not stop the centre forward haif volley tô the right. Despite the 3-1 lead the boys from the Whit- by squad kept the Pickering aide under pressure during the early part of the second hall: it was now up to Justin Moore to prove his talents as a playmaker; he passed the bahl from the right toward the centre where David Uden received on the run, went past a couple of Pickering defenders and finding himseif face to face with the goalie had no problem in putting the bail out of his reach near the base of the right post. Two minutes later the same two players repeated a fur- ther show of their skills: Justin Moore took a per- fect corner kick which was headed in coolly by David Uden. F'ive minutes later it was Justin Moore's turn to conneet the sixth goal for his team when he pushed the bail in the empty net following a hard shot by Paul Moschella which the goalie could not retain. With only a few minutes lef t the Checker's Variety players relaxed somewhat control of the play and as a resuit were surprised again as a rare Pickering shotý was deflected into his own net by a Whitby team member, ending the game with a stili impressive 6-2 win in favour of Whitby. Needless to say the for- wards proved them- ielves quite effective in putting the bail into their opponents net but the whole defense played'a strong game despite the allowing of the two goals: Michael MacKay, the goalie, and his teamrnates in front of him, Mirko Favît, Lee Kosloff, Johnny Palaz- zolo, Dean Alexander and Philip Hughes, flot only protected weli their net throughout most of the game but also were supportive of their for- wards.
